Holker Street : Barrow AFC
In Honour of Barrow's excellent Giant Killing last Night here is a brief entry for the lost Leaguue Grounds - of copurse we may see League Football there again one day.... Wiki states:...Holker Street is a sports stadium located in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. It has a current capacity of 4256 of which 1000 is seating. However, the stadium's record attendance of 16,874 was set in 1956 for the FA Cup third round match between Barrow A.F.C. and Swansea City.
Barrow A.F.C have used this ground since 1909, but it has also been used as a speedway track during its history. The Barrow Bombers operated from Holker Street from 1972 until 1974
Holker Street was at the centre of Barrow's financial problems of the late 1990s, due to disputes over its ownership, which now rests with the football club.
The stadium's future is uncertain, as Barrow A.F.C. consider plans to relocate to a new stadium in Barrow's proposed docklands development. Such a ground would be undoubtedly shared with Barrow Raiders, the town's rugby league club.
bbcgull : This ground was a League Ground from 1921 til 1972 when they were replaced by Hereford United...

And we're due at Holker Street on 7 February for our first visit since October 1969 (unless, of course, we're there in the 3rd round of the FA Cup). That last visit resulted in a 4-0 win with goals from John Rudge, Bob Glozier and Fred Binney (2). It'll be the first league meeting between the clubs for exactly 39 years as this cover shows: Some of the adverts from that programme are real period pieces: Sangster Sports on Torwood Street, run by Mike Sangster the former tennis star and TUFC reserve player; Tom Northcott for plumbing, heating, painting and decorating; Cavanna homes for under £4,000; drinking, dancing and dining at the Shiphay Manor Country Club (cue Merse?):

This is the programme for Barrow's last home game in the Football League. I think I bought it from a long-gone programme shop in Sidwell Street, Exeter shortly after the game was played and before Barrow failed to win re-election. I then realised its' significance and kept hold of it. The link with the Torquay United reserve programme - on another thread - is the presence of John Rowlands. For those not aware of the process, the bottom four teams in Division 4 in those days applied for re-election. They could be opposed by any team from outside the league which wished to stand (although, towards the end, the stronger leagues organised themselves to limit the number of applicants). Over the years there were some pretty frivolous candidates. When The End notes were compiled Barrow did not know its' fate. "The End" merely refers to the conclusion of the season. The final words are those heard in many a small town at the end of a railway line! Barrow must have been pessimistic because Hereford had beaten Newcastle United in the FA Cup that year and had finished runners-up to Chelmsford City in the Southern League. Northampton, Crewe and Stockport were safely re-elected. Barrow and Hereford tied; Hereford won the second ballot. The unsuccessful applicants were Bradford PA, Cambridge City, Wimbledon, Bangor, Bedford, Boston, Hillingdon, Romford, Telford, Wigan and Yeovil. Where are they all now? (source of much of this information: Simon Inglis's centenary history of the Football League).
