This was a hugely-important game that we've previously discussed on a number of occasions.
More prosaically Alpine Joe enjoys spotting the names of politicians in these old programmes. Well, there's an E.Varley on the Middlesbrough board. But I hardly think it was the Staveley-born Eric Varley, MP for Chesterfield and later Baron Varley of Chesterfield in the County of Derbyshire. He sounds more of a Spireite to me.
Two own-goals already that season for a certain Dick Edwards, firstly when playing for Notts County, then for Mansfield. A player we remember fondly but, maybe, one who Felix recalls as part of a cast of nasties?
I wonder if Bill Athey, the cricketer, has a family connection with C.W.Athey and Sons building contractors of Linthorpe? Athey was a Smoggie which, of course made him eligible to play for Yorkshire under the traditional rules. Politically Athey was on the feisty side and had a Union Jack tattooed on his arm. I'd like to think this is something he has in common with Alpine Joe.

I was at this game and have a copy of the programme. The E Varley on the board was Ernest Varley (no relation). Bill (CWJ) Athey is the son of the CW Athey of the building firm. Also of interest (possibly) on the |Middlesbrough board is Dr UN Phillips who was the England team doctor of the time and who wrote a book about it a few years ago. He died earlier this year. The 'U' stands for 'Ugo'.

Doctor Ugo Neil Phillips got his first name from being named after Dr Ugo Zanazi who saved the lives of both mother and child when Dr Phillips was born. In a strange coincidence there was another Ugo at Middlesbrough – Ugo the Cat – Rolando Ugolini. Rolando was a goalkeeper who played on Teesside from 1948/49 to 1956/57. However, I do not think they were at Middlesbrough at the same time although it was close. Sadly Rolando also passed away recently.
