I faced a challenge as I entered Plainmoor on Tuesday. "Name a TUFC player with 11 or more letters in his surname" was Gateman's cunning question.
After a minute or two of chin scratching, followed by frustratingly counting to ten over Trebilcock, Rowe-Turner and McLoughlin, we triumphantly came up with Gottskalksson, followed by Ingimarsson. Chelston was not impressed as I suddenly blurted out Sleeuwenhoek, Fortune-West and Pickersgill during the match.
Of course, with the help of excel's "=len" function, the definitive answer is never far away. Fifteen of them.
Gottskalksson 13 Sleeuwenhoek 12 Wolstenholme 12 Chamberlain 11 Connaughton 11 Constantine 11 Fairbrother 11 FortuneWest 11 Hinshelwood 11 Hinshelwood 11 Ingimarsson 11 Killoughery 11 Pickersgill 11 Stonebridge 11 Worthington 11
And what everybody really needs to know, the most common surname length is six letters.
3 letters: 17 4 letters: 107 5 letters: 205 6 letters: 258 7 letters: 178 8 letters: 123 9 letters: 72 10 letters: 24 11 letters: 12 12 letters: 2 13 letters: 1 Total 999

I'm usually a big supporter of Jon's investigations but I'm struggling to add anything to this one.
I take it that 'H' is the most common initial letter when it comes to player surnames?

Last week, having little else to watch I noted that the 'font' size of the names of the Telford players differed from shirt to shirt.
A lot of the players noted by Jon would have played in the days when names weren't shown on shirts but I wonder, if they had, would some of these names have started halfway down one sleeve, worked their way across the back and ended down the other sleeve?

Of course Ofori-Acheampong has now blown Gottskalksson out of the water.

I am not sure whether Ofori-etc should be counted as it is a double barreled name but don't want to be considered a pedant. I am surprised no footballer has had a surname beginning with Q. John Uzzell is unique. It is also surprising how many peoples surnames begin with C. Of the books I have read 73 authors names have begun with C - second only to S on 83.

Sam - No TUFC Q's but plenty of Quinns about in the game over the years. My favourite Q though - Frank Queudrue (spelling?).
And Jon manages to disappear hyphens - see FortuneWest at the top.
I worked with Dennis Hinshelwood - any relation to the two for TU above?

You're right Midland - Fortune-West. Jon, get a grip, sort it out.

I am not sure whether Ofori-etc should be counted as it is a double barreled name Gateman set the challenge and laid down the rules. Hyphenated names allowed, but the hyphen does not count as a letter. That's why I wiped all hyphens out before counting the characters. OforiAcheampong is our champion.

No TUFC Q's but plenty of Quinns about in the game over the years. We had a James Quinn who I watched play at places like Tiverton, Buckland and Willand in a few first team friendlies and Devon Bowl games. He was a pretty promising attacking left back but joined the very long list of young players who were nearly good enough but not really good enough. I'm struggling with X though!

It's only a matter of time before we sign a player of Chinese extraction with the surname Xi.
Ha, Barton, it's not as bad as you think. At about 15 I realised that on occasions I would start to read a book I may have already read. I then got an A to Z book and listed the books I read under the surname of the author. Still use it now, 686 books later. C is boosted considerably by Connolly, Child, Cornwell so I actually made an error, it's not 73 authors but 73 books whose authors begin with the letter C. It's practical solution, not idiosyncratic.

With Child and Cornwell (both of tehm) that would take my C's to over 40 books alone. Not sure who your Connelly is (Billy? lol). And I'm not sure I'm happy with Gateman's competition rules. Hyphens disregarded? I ask you! More b*stardisation of English Grammar conventions; is it?
