More tactical nous from Allan Brown. Those columns of his invariably had something to say.
Alex Russell at number ten for Southport. Didn't he have a son who played a bit?
An announcement about the Watney Cup, a pre-season tournament that shone brightly for a few seasons. Sponsorship, penalty shoot-outs. What will they think of next?
Two guineas annual subscription to join the Golden Blue Club. That makes it sound like a proper club.
Coming soon a FA Youth Cup game against the Argyle. Somebody, somewhere probably remembers that one.

Coming soon a FA Youth Cup game against the Argyle. Somebody, somewhere probably remembers that one. 1-1 at Plainmoor with Stuart McGowan scoring after 2 minutes (even though the Herald reported Phil Sandercock!). Mike Dowling full time Guzz professional scoring from the penalty spot 15 minutes from time after fouling Phil S just outside the box before being brought down by Steve Middleweek, then Ian Twitchen nearly clinching it but getting a double save from future Spurs keeper Peta Ba'lac; Replay Home Park stunning Sandercock goal past Ba'lac into top corner of goal at Devonport End and I thought we had it as they were creating nothing. 15 minutes or so from the end a very rare Robbie Robbins mistake in goal and they equalised. Extra time finished 1-1; Toss of coin for replay. Home Park again. Lost 3-1. No match report!!! Twitch scored our goal ... but outplayed when we should have won the previous two (although only one would have been necessary). They stuck 5 past Bristol Rovers in the next round as we probably would have done as well!

Alex Russell at number ten for Southport. Alex Russell's midfield skills steered an unfashionable seaside club to an unexpected promotion to the third tier, only for them to come straight back down and, after he'd left the club, go out of the Football League altogether shortly after. I wonder what happened to his son.

Ken Sandercock was risking his life getting too close to Graham "Shotgun" French. He emerged from a prison sentence under the name Graham Lafite - which I suppose is a French name. Malcolm Macdonald. Cyprus remember him.

Ah, given the times, were Southport the Sensational Alex Russell Band? Malcolm Macdonald. Cyprus remember him. I was there!

Two guineas annual subscription to join the Golden Blue Club. That makes it sound like a proper club. But only if the club secretary remembered to buy West Country Pasties from Moore's of Preston.

A feature of these 1969/70 programmes is the inclusion of Bill Luscombe's idiosyncratic history of the early days of the club. Reading each instalment would have been my first introduction to the work.
And here, in the Southport programme, we have a reference to Percy Narracott who was to become "a referee and linesman of national repute." I wonder to what extent that was true? An online search throws up a Percy Tregonning Narracott (born 1880) later a plumber of Westbourne Road. The one and the same?
This quote from Luscombe is revealing: "the banks and legal offices in the town provided us with a lot of excellent material. The players came to Torquay from other parts of the country and were keen to get a game." Some of these players had apparently played for their counties. Herbert Gane of Surrey was the one in goggles.
