The best football programme cover in history, in my humble opinion. I can't think of a single one for any club before or since that matches it. No, sod my opinion: the best football programme in history - FACT. I'm not interested in debate and I won't accept any argument. End of.

This was a Sunday game and, although I can't be sure (and may have previously made the same claim for another match), I'm pretty certain this was when Disgruntled of Torquay (aged 18) penned an angry letter to Brian Moore of ITV's Big Match.
Poor Brian had introduced his 2pm programme with words to the effect that "we've got some absolutely fantastic action for you this afternoon so, whatever you do, don't go anywhere for the next hour!" An innocuous enough remark but one sufficient to push an angry young man into railing against the big capitalist beast of commercial television and how it was set on killing his club. Well, not until after returning home from the Mansfield match by, which time, he was still steaming.
Ten days later a letter arrived from London Weekend TV. A standard one-size-fits-all Big Match letter but with a couple of hand-written sentences at the bottom from Brian Moore. One was to say he had too much sentiment for Gillingham to say that he would ever want to stop people from watching lower division football. The second was, in light of the result, to congratulate me upon making the right choice. Top man that Brian Moore.
The English letter of disgruntlement is, of course, an art form. I was shown one yesterday from Mr Angry (aged 61) addressed to his high-profile MP on the topic of the badger cull. Oh dear, oh dear. What abject piffle. My 1974 letter to the Big Match was a far better effort.
But back to that 1974 programme and that fine feature about young 'keeper David Hookway. What happened to him? Did he ever grow? And who was Tommy Cavanagh?
