Sorry, this is going to have to be a brief one this week as I've been very busy
Mansfield were the form team in the division until recently, but haven't won in their last 3 competitive matches, after drawing with Bristol Rovers last weekend and being beaten 4-1 by a resurgent Hartlepool the week before, with a JPT loss to Chesterfield in between. After questions surrounding their attack over the summer, they have emerged as surprise contenders for promotion
Line-up vs Bristol Rovers:
Gk Alan Marriott Def Ritchie Sutton Def John Dempster Def Martin Riley Def Lee Beevers Mid Kieran Murtagh Mid Lee Stevenson Mid Sam Clucas Mid Anthony Howell Mid Colin Daniel For Calvin Andrew
Subs: Liam Mitchell (Gk), James Jennings (Def), Godfrey Poku (Mid), Matt Rhead (For), Ben Hutchinson (For), Lindon Meikle (Mid), Ollie Palmer (For)
Head-to-head:
Mansfield wins: 31 Torquay wins: 18 Draws: 18
Last match: Mansfield 0-1 Torquay (Benyon 87), FA Cup, November 2010
Last league match: Mansfield 1-1 Torquay (Duffy 36; Sturrock 64), Conference, March 2009
Last Torquay league win: Torquay 2-0 Mansfield (D'Sane 54; Woods 69), Conference, November 2008
Last Mansfield win: Mansfield 5-0 Torquay (Boulding 14; Gritton 39, 59, 77 pen; Baptiste 64), League Two, January 2007
Last Torquay league win at Field Mill: Mansfield 1-2 Torquay (Hathaway 8; Wood 52; Nelson 79), Division Three, October 1996
Torquay have failed to win in their last 9 league matches at Mansfield

Thanks for getting that up nice and early James and more than enough in there to get some debate started!
Looking at our side, we should have a couple of genuine centre backs starting at least and if McKenzie is training again, maybe even one on the bench. Will be interesting to see if Poke is back in contention for a starting berth although think Ricey will be continuing for now. The other question in defence at least is whether Cruise will revert back to left back which I think is more likely and overall we should now be looking to shore up those leaks in defence and give us a good chance in a game!
McCourt apparently had a good debut and the question is whether Knill will start him and maybe with Harding still out more than likely will be runnning out with Manse. It could leave space for Lathrope in front of the defence but I think particularly at home, Knill will stick with 4-4-2. Chappell and Azeez sounded like they did well on the wings and would like them to stay there leaving the way open for Benyon to partner Hawley and maybe score successive goals against Mansfield for us!!!!

Just a single sheet for the last game played at Plainmoor before the outbreak of World War Two

That 1939 programme is a marvellous relic.
A rare Division 3(S) sojourn for Mansfield. You'd hope they weren't labelled "Southern Softies" - or worse - by those loveable scallies from dead hard, northern Chesterfield.

We could have had a fighting chance of getting something out of this, but it aint gonna happen. Lings love child is back from "International Duty" where he did nothing, and will go straight back into the side and do nothing! The defence should be back to something resembling full strength, but of course Cruise will be dropped because we can't have Nico throwing a strop and asking to be loaned out again! McCourt it seems did more in two minutes in the Wycombe game than Mansell has done all season...expect McCourt to come on in the last ten minutes in a vain bid to rescue something from the match! Oh, and of course poor old Benyon won't get a look in until the last three minutes when he comes on as sub!
3:0 Mansfield.

I remember Ling saying that Danny Stevens although he was a winger should score a few goals...can't remember if he actually did under Lings rule but was expected to. If Bodin scores for us this season I'll show my arse in Tesco's!

Why is Ling being blamed for this? It was a wealthy fan who put up the money specifically to sign him. Most fans wanted to sign him. Don't blame the manager for being saddled with a player who was massively overrated by Torquay fans

Don't blame the manager for being saddled with a player who was massively overrated by Torquay fans Ling was the one who continually harped on about how much he would like to sign Bodin, every time you looked at an article concerning Torquay Bodin was mentioned...it was an obsession! Swindon rubbed their hands together when the time came to get rid of Bodin. If Ling hadn't been so obsessed with Bodin we would probably have got him for 5-10 thousand and some poor woman in Torquay would not have wasted 50 thousand pounds on a waste of space...she would have been far better off putting the money on a horse!

But you're ignoring the fact that most fans wanted him at the club as well - he was saying what people wanted to hear. It's all well and good saying "it's all Ling's fault" with the benefit of hindsight, but that's ignoring the context of the time - he was considered to have been a positive influence on the team during that previous season, and fans believed we missed him when he left and wanted him back. Whether that was the right decision or not is completely irrelevant - signing Bodin served a purpose at the time
And this is not the only time that the club has signed a player that the fans have been asking for in recent years. It's almost certainly the same reason why Benyon's in the squad, and Michael Poke was also signed at a time when for many fans he was the only option to replace Olejnik

If that scorline turns out to be correct i sincerely hope its greeted by audible prolonged booing at the final whistle ! Two home 0 3 defeats in a row.........not even Torquay could manage that surely.

It's almost certainly the same reason why Benyon's in the squad, and Michael Poke was also signed at a time when for many fans he was the only option to replace Olejnik I agree, the fans were clamouring for the club to sign Bodin. Where it went wrong was Lings total fixation on Bodin, possibly because of Bodin senior, the big mate of Ling and indeed Lings first choice to work alongside him before his possible tenth choice Taylor! As I've already stated, I think we could have got him for a lot less If Ling hadn't tried so hard, and at the end of the day Ling signed him and not the fans. You mention Poke and Benyon, the big difference there is that they were free. I'm not saying Bodin is any worse than Cameron or Harding, but I would imagine he's on a lot more money than them and of course the manager feels obligated to play him because he cost us (and more so that poor woman) money. So we have a double (negative) whammy he cost us money and we have to play him!

Sadly, I think Torquay are quite capable of managing that, and as I have said, If we start with Bodin, Nico and Mansell then I think by five Saturday afternoon we will be in the bottom two!
