Yes it was two yellows though probably wasnt far from a straight red under the last defender waffle. Much better performance today and we probably deserved a win over the match (at least till we were down to 10 men).

Back to centre half for cruise...at least for one game!

Just back from yet another awful sub standard league match yet with a couple of encouraging signs and of course as many if not more discouraging ones to go with them. WE DID'NT CONCEDE! YAY!! Knill may have finally realised that sometimes you have to set a side up to be more solid and less open particularly as has been apparent for weeks and if you don't have the players with the right qualities to play the system. Mansell I thought sat a little deeper than usual with McCourt ahead of him and Bodin playing behind Hawley a sort of midfield triangle with Chappell and Azeez still able to play the wide roles. Bodin looks more at home there than out wide and impressed in the first half with some quality play that saw his shot cannon of the foot of the upright across the goal and out for a goal kick. He still has a habit of not looking up and just running into defenders and promptly losing the ball. Hawley didn't have great game and the ball just never seemed to stick up front and he was easily muscled off the ball at times. A game of few chances in the first half which I thought lacked quality from both sets of players though Mansfield did look more at ease and pretty solid at the back while we struggled to build up any sort of rhythm or tempo to our game and our attempts at going forward were broken up far to easily. In the first 20 minutes Pearce had probably committed six or seven fouls most of them clumsy over committed challenges that eventually earned him his first booking. The second half pretty much continued where the first had ended with both sides rarely displaying any form or real threat. Rice pulled off one good save at the foot of a post but later looked clown like when he came and missed a high ball and luckily we managed to clear. Azeez wasnt at his best either and missed one of the better chances when he made room for himself in the area and dragged a shot wide when it would have been easier to have hit the target. Chapel didnt have a look in today and was played well by the Mansfield defense. The introduction of Nathan Craig was met by some ironic cheers but as soon as he came on he played a couple of nice measured passes through the middle that just made you wonder why he hasn't had a look inn yet. The Pearce sending off had a certain inevitability about it with Clucas clear of the back line he had to make a foul but we were caught square once again and that's the price you pay. Benners introduced late on again didn't have time to make an impact or gain any useful pitch time though he would start for me over Hawley as you know you will at least get 100% for the ninety and that is what we need now every match and hopefully find some consistency and form along the way. McCourt was MOM and he put in a good shift but isn't the creative type, and another one of those 100% that maybe lacks a bit technically.
On this showing though I still fear for our future as a league club. Mansfield are an example of getting their priorities right. Solid and hard to break down if a little unspectacular but they for sure will still be a league club this time next year.

Not the best of games to watch and as a footballing spectacle it was quite a drab affair. Torquay had some decent efforts on goal here and there but it was nothing sustained. The frustrating thing is that when Torquay were building up a nice bit of pressure with over 20 minutes left and substitute Craig was showing some good influence in central midfield, Mansell gave the ball away in his own half and Mansfield were through on goal. Pearce tugged back the attacker and rightly got sent off for a second bookable offence. Pearce had been our most commanding defender and it was then a case if Torquay could hang on for a point. It was commendable to Torquay that they did. Crowd 2,473, over 300 from Mansfield packed in Bristow bench, sponsors MOTM loanee McCourt making his full league debut.
It was intersting to see Bodin play in a central role today up front with Hawley and indeed it was Bodin who came closest in the first half. From outside the box Bodin showed great footwork and unleashed a shot that hit the inside of the post and rebounded to safety. I thought Bodin did some good stuff playing centrally and looked our best threat even though he did mess a few things up at times. Torquay had the best of the chances in the first half, Hawley put a low cross over from close range. In the main the game was quite a dull affair to watch but at least Torquay did not concede and Rice was not troubled. Torquay had a tendency in the first half of giving away needless free-kicks for the whistle happy referee. Torquay's defenders had a new tactic for preparing set pieces by holding hands! Well it seemed to work...
The second half Torquay started at a good tempo and at times played some good one touch stuff. Azeez had our best chance from a Chappell cross but heir keeper saved his shot low down. Craig came on for the quiet Chappel to a good ovation in the 64th minute and at last we had a bit of creativity in central midfield. Torquay had a couple of decent shouts for penalties that were not given. The turning point was Mansell's awful pass which resulted in Pearce sending off. Cruise then came on for Bodin and later Benyon for Hawley and Torquay held out against mounting pressure from Mansfield.
So a well earned point playing with 10 men and at least we've stopped the losing run. But without the suspended Pearce on Tuesday I don't fancy our chances at all. And next week at home to Portsmouth looks a tough ask. There were patches of good play from us today, I liked the look of Bodin playing centrally in attack and our new loanees are settling in well. I'm afraid Pearce's suspension has come at a bad time and so it looks like it will be Cruise and O'Connor in central defence on Tuesday. I bet Rene can't wait!

Just read the posts from you that went today,on the whole am still upbeat for us for the rest of the season.....and good to read that the new loanees settled in well.......but clean sheet,so that's a step in the right direction,ok a small step,at least we can go into burton game with a tad of confidence and belief......ok you may not have seen the best game footballing wise, but a point against a well drilled team, got to be positive that......so looking forward to Tuesday and Pompey next week, definetly settle for 4 points from those 2 games.......6would be better......you never know......si

Rene is only making the bench at Burton at the moment, he never came on today and Albion did well enough without him to suggest he's not going to be needed for a while. Wonder whether he is thinking wistfully of Plainmoor?

Register Without a considerable rewriting of history I just can't see how we or anyone else could have picked up Billy for that fee. Of course we all seem to remember the facts differently but my understanding at the time was that both ourselves and Crewe had met Swindon's asking price, and it was therefore left to the player to decide. 'On 2 July 2012, Bodin signed a two-year contract with Torquay United on an undisclosed fee,[13] beating Crewe Alexandra who attempted to sign him on a permanent basis'. Link - Wikipedia Billy Bodin I assumed that Billy had three choices to consider, sign the new contract offered to him by Swindon, join Crewe, or join us. After talking things over with Dad, he joined us: Swindon-born Bodin's pride was perhaps stung when he was then allowed to leave his home-town club, but he turned down the chance to join Crewe and opted instead for another season of League 2 football with Torquay.
The young player's decision to choose the lower division was not taken lightly and took long consideration after taking advice from his father Paul, a former Swindon and Wales defender who is now the Robins' youth team coach.
"My dad told me to do what I wanted but his advice did have an impact on my decision," said Bodin junior. "My own feeling was that I would get more games at Torquay and to be playing week-in, week-out, was very important to me."Link - Bodin The Football LeagueHowever the Herald Express reported at the time that Swansea City were also interested: Torquay United didn't only beat League One Crewe Alexandra for the signature of Billy Bodin recently. It turns out that Premiership Swansea City also fancied the 20-year-old former Swindon Town forward. Bodin chose Plainmoor over Crewe's Gresty Road, even though they'll be playing League One football there next season, when he made his £70,000 move to the Gulls.Link - Herald Express BodinThere was evidently quite a bit of interest in the teenage Bodin who had already played a dozen games for the Welsh International Under 21 side. Several clubs rated him, and it was definitely my impression that most inside Plainmoor did as well, even though evidence has now emerged of an ambivalent bunch in close proximity to Ditmar. With impressive performances under his belt, and 12 caps already at International Under 21 level, Swindon fans were confidently predicting that teenage sensation (I miss the smileys) Bodin would be valued at between £75,000 and £100,000 if the fee was eventually set by tribunal. Given the circumstances at the time I can't see why a tribunal would have valued Bodin at £5000 to £10,000. Swindon fans would have been very unhappy if Billy had gone for £40,000: Link - Swindon Fans Value BillyI'm still not convinced that it was only Ling's 'obsession' that pushed Billy's transfer fee up from the £5K-£10K range. Get real how was billy worth 5-10k when we nearly sold a lad to Aston villa for 50k who can't even score for the youth team

Funny enough, Billy had a good game today and seemed to enjoy being in a more central role and was a threat, being very unlucky not to score in the first half and teed up Hawley nicely in the second who was pushed off the ball as he was about to pull the trigger. I certainly saw a half decent player today and reminded me a bit of the form that he showed in his first spell with us.

A scoreless game, a regular supporter near me leaving at half-time, it had all the ingredients of a drab affair but while not a classic, it wasn't that bad and we created enough chances to win until Pearce picked up that second yellow directly resulting from a poor pass by Manse.
Mansfield are a big side and quite solid but didn't impress that much and in the first half were restricted to a free header from a corner. There was a lot of head tennis going on and they had the rub of the green as far as the referee was concerned which made it very hard going but we fashioned a number of good chances. Bodin's effort was the best, coming off the inside of the post with many fans thinking it was in. There were also a number of other chances which were either deflected or went just wide and it is typical of a team near the bottom that these do not go in.
The second half started well with a break on the left being crossed to Azeez near the penalty spot but his first time shot was slightly underhit but nevertheless would have gone in if directed towards a corner but went straight to the keeper who saved with his legs. We were starting to look dangerous and had a few penalty shouts, the best of which a good break from Bodin saw him put Hawley through but a push by the defender sent him sprawling just as he was about to pull the trigger! At the other end, probably would have been a red as well for good effect but as it was Pearce got his second yellow and back to the wall time. Rice did make one save and a few hacks in the area were kept out and would have been a travesty if we had lost. Nico did take a very good free kick that just clipped the top of the bar with their keeper no where near.
Positives from today. A welcome return to form from Bodin, probably more confident after scoring for Wales u21, nice cameo from Craig in midfield that was unfortunately curtailed by going down to ten men for the last quarter. Azeez continues to look good. A clean sheet can't be underestimated after the recent deluge but helps having two centre halves, pity about Pearce suspended for Tuesday...

PL teams can afford to spunk 50k on a youngster who may or may not turn out to be worth it. League 2 teams (if they have any sense) cant.
