Saturday, 19 October 1963 was a memorable day in the history of Torquay United as they defeated Newport County 8-3 in a fourth division match at Plainmoor before a crowd of 4,442.
This is the highest aggregate of goals scored in a league match at Plainmoor and Robin Stubbs’ tally of five goals is the highest individual aggregate for a league match in the club’s history.
The weather was good and as usual on a Saturday morning I played football at Victoria Park, Paignton, before returning home for a bath, we had no shower then, my lunch and prepare for the league match at Plainmoor.
I left in plenty of time and caught the number 30 bus from the triangle at Preston, Paignton. The single bus fare for a child was 4d (1½p), the ground admission charge 1s 6d (7 ½p), and the new style pocket size programme cost 6d (2½p)
The league table showed Torquay in 6th place, one point ahead of Newport, who were 8th. Ironically, Torquay had won their previous six home games and lost their last six away matches. Newport’s away record was good as they averaged one point per game, with nine goals scored and nine conceded.
Torquay attacked the Ellacombe end in the first half and held a 2-1 lead at the interval. One goal I remember is when Reg Jenkins sent over a cross from the left and Robin Stubbs knocked the ball in from close range at the far post.
There were no further goals until the 65th minute and then the floodgates opened with eight goals scored in the final twenty five minutes! Unfortunately, I cannot recall how the scoring went but I do remember one excellent goal from Stubbs, a shot from around 20 yards.
It was 8-2 in the final minute when Newport were awarded a penalty. I was heading for the exit and stopped behind the goal to see Joe Bonson score his second goal. Terry Adlington got a touch to the ball but could not save the penalty.
If only we had The Football League Show in 1963; I would certainly have recorded the highlights! At the time there was no Match of the Day and we had to rely on local television for rare footage of Torquay home games.
Robin Stubbs was beginning to make his presence felt and he shot to the national headlines with this exceptional performance. He had now scored 13 goals from 14 league appearances and but for injuries, illness and suspension in the second half of the season, would surely have exceeded 30 goals.
I must have purchased the Herald Express Football Final that evening but regrettably I did not retain my copy. Perhaps Herald Express could reproduce a copy of their match report to commemorate this special occasion?
Does anyone have a newspaper cutting and if you were at the game can you let us have your memories?
Many years later at Plainmoor I overheard a conversation about a Torquay United supporter who only missed one match at Plainmoor in 10 years. Unfortunately, the game he missed was on 19 October 1963!
The early stage of the 1963/64 season was a remarkable period for Torquay United as they were scoring several goals at Plainmoor while losing almost every away match. Commencing with the 4-2 victory over Hartlepools, Torquay scored forty three goals in ten consecutive home victories. During the same period they only managed to score four goals from nine away matches, drawing two and losing seven!
In 1984/85 Torquay’s leading league goalscorer was Mario Walsh with a grand total of five, the same number that Stubbs scored in one game!
Finally, I attach a copy of the programme for the Newport match, taken from the TFF Programmes Room. Once again, I am indebted to timbo for his excellent work in creating copies of so many Torquay United programmes.
