I too came away from the match feeling that we have some good players but not a manager who knows what to do with them. How long Knill can carry on getting results like this will be interesting. I feel sorry for Mrs Knill. Uprooted her family to move with her husbands job and he screws up big time. They wont sack him though cause they know they cant. A Ling side would have come away with a result last night. I feel now is the time for TUFC to find its true footballing level. And I dont believe its in the Football League. Ironically, we have a manager who is capable of taking us there. Downes and Pearce wont make as much difference as people make out. The way the team is set up, we are always liable for teams running at us and scoring, as happened again last night. This much lauded Brass and Knill partnership is shit. Dagenham away my next match. The good thing about last night was the ale. Burton is a Mecca for excellent real ale and pubs. Type of place I could live in for that alone. Chins up, it may never happen

Felix I think you finally may have seen the light!
Seven wins in the last thirty eight matches tells you all you want to know.
We are heading back to the Conference at full speed so we should all maybe try and get used to the idea and will be a little less painful when the inevitable does happen.
The club and the football team are stuck in a rut that will be extremely difficult to steer out of and for the life of me I cannot see where the next decent performance or win is going to come from. I haven't heard or seen anything coming from within the club, other than the odd comment from Alan Knill along the lines of "that draw felt like a win" that would convince me otherwise
You hit the nail on the head there Chris we simply don't have players that are good enough, one or two may pass as league footballers but we have far to many mediocre footballers who would struggle to get first team football at many non league clubs. For someone to suggest that we have a talented squad is like watching the singer on a talent show who is totally convinced that they will be the next Michael Jackson yet cannot hit a single correct note.
Its that ridiculous and from what I have from his interviews I am beginning to believe Alan Knill will be performing on the X Factor next year!
Last week I watched the Macclesfield v Southport match and it was far and above the standard I have witnessed at Plainmoor this season the passing was on the ground and both sides played the game on the deck, were committed, organised and up for it for ninety minutes.
I see the lifeblood being drained out of the club week after week with the players losing the little confidence they did have, the board stuck in a no win situation and probably have no idea how to stop this slide, and supporteres angry embarrassed by the performances, and frustrated at the ineptitude of some of the players who will eventually say enough is enough and finally call it a day.
Even the new stand has inadvertently destroyed any atmosphere the ground used to have, the Popside is now like a morgue on a Saturday afternoon.
Standby for some more hammerings unless Downes comes back quickly though he may only be able to stem so much of our hemorrhaging defense.

Did you notice how easily Cruse was turned by Billy in the box for the first and the space he was given in midfield to slide the ball through for the second?

Funny you should mention that, Pete. I saw Alfreton Town v Cambridge United recently and it was a cracker. Leaving out the Cheltenham game it was the best I've seen this season and on the evidence of last night United would be unlikely to come back from Alfreton with a point if the two teams should be meeting in the same division. Aaron is missed just as much in attack as in defence. The two lads at the back were by no means the worst performers at Burton, but when we got a free kick in Albion's half there was no-one to aim for. My cat could have played in goal for Burton and we would still not have scored if we'd played till midnight. Maybe that was why Craig blasted that free kick in the second half straight at the Torquay fans behind the goal rather than aiming for his team mates who were waiting for a cross. Either that or he's just plain stupid. His absence from the team before yesterday and Alan Knill's attempt to get him to go elsewhere on loan suggests that the latter suggestion might be the right answer. Certainly, he had his chance last night and blew it spectacularly. |

I really failed to see what if any formation we were playing. That's a shame.I was hoping someone could tell me. I think it's obvious what the starting formation was meant to be and why. Mansell and McCourt holding. Craig third man in midfield with license to push up. Hawley up top, with Azeez and Bodin joining him when they could but pulling wide to make a 5 in midfield when they had to. Sounds like a plan. It was the first sub that threw me. I was expecting Chapell for Bodin like for like, but the new lad McCallum came on. Isn't he a big centre-forward? Did he play wide in Bodin's place? Or did he play through the middle with Hawley going wide? Or did they both play through the middle, with Craig going wide left? Or none of the above? |

Apparently it was more than one of those - from what I've read (admittedly this is second hand), McCallum slotted into Bodin's wide position initially, but after Chapell came on ended up going through the middle. However, it seems like Hawley also spent a bit of time wide left, so they may have rotated
It sounds bizarre - we've just brought in a 6 ft 3, reputedly physical striker, presumably to play up front as a target man, and yet Knill's sticking him on the wing. While I don't like 4-4-2 and I respect and appreciate the commitment to playing 4-5-1, that seems about as logical as, er, Buckle's ill-fated attempt to turn Kee into a winger
See, you could potentially defend Knill from the perspective that he has made the right signings (possibly true), or argue that he has had bad luck and is working in tough circumstances (definitely true), but decisions like that make you wonder if he's up to the task regardless of that. I know even Sir Alex Ferguson played players out of position, and not always to a great deal of success, but Knill doesn't have two European Cups to his name...

To be fair, I got the impression that TUFC were trying to play a fluid game with the attacking players inter-changing positions. They were doing OK till Bodin had to go off but in the second half the problem wasn't the formation or which of Hawley, McCallum and Azeez were playing in which role; it was that none of them received a decent pass for the entire 45 minutes and neither did Chapell or Benyon when they came on.
Burton deserve credit for their pressure which meant that the Torquay defence and midfield rarely had the chance to measure a pass but the sad fact is that even when they had time to do better they invariably just gave it straight back to the opposition. Both sides had 11 players on the field but you'd have thought Torquay were outnumbered since Burton seemed to have more defenders, more midfielders and more attackers. Basically, it's just that their players are much better than ours. We weren't actually outnumbered but we were certainly outclassed.
