A great chance for a point or three, this - Chesterfield are seven games without a win in the league, although they boosted their confidence by seeing off Daventry Town in the FA Cup on Saturday. They also have a Football League Trophy match against Rochdale tonight. You would still consider them to be the favourites for this match, judging by our form and the ability in their squad, and the odds reflect this, but this is quite a disappointing run for a team that only a few weeks ago looked to be running away with the division
Captain of the side is experienced 31-year-old defender Ian Evatt, a veteran of over 350 league appearances, most them coming with Blackpool for whom he played for in League One, the Championship and the Premier League. Yet surprisingly, after playing only 12 games last season, he has found himself slipping down to League Two for the first time in his career. Is there a reason for this? We may see why on Saturday. Other notable members of this squad include Jimmy Ryan, key to Accrington's run to the play-offs in 2010-11, former Port Vale striker Marc Richards, former Coventry forward Gary McSheffrey, and former Huddersfield winger Gary Roberts
Team vs Daventry Town:
Gk Tommy Lee Def Sam Hird Def Liam Cooper Def Ian Evatt Def Drew Talbot Mid Ollie Banks Mid Gary Roberts Mid Jimmy Ryan For Marc Richards For Eoin Doyle For Gary McSheffrey
Subs: Aaron Chapman (Gk), Ritchie Humphreys (Uti), Sam Togwell (Mid), Jamie Devitt (Mid), Tendayi Darikwa (Mid), Jay O'Shea (Mid), Armand Gnanduillet (For)
Head-to-head:
Chesterfield wins: 16 Torquay win: 10 Draws: 13
Last match: Torquay 2-1 Chesterfield (Labadie 2, Howe 8, Cooper 77), League Two, March 2013
Last Chesterfield win: Chesterfield 1-0 Torquay (Lester 28), League Two, December 2010
Last Chesterfield win at Plainmoor: Torquay 0-1 Chesterfield, Division Four, November 1984 - in other words, Chesterfield haven't won here for nearly 29 years, and that itself was only the second time it had happened

It hurts me to say it, James, but at least 9 of that Chesterfield side are better than their equivalent in the Gulls' team, and all their substitutes would be in our first XI, no problem.
If Chesterfield play to their full potential they will hammer us out of sight, but for some strange reason that never happens when they go to Plainmoor so maybe the Yellow Army will inspire the Gulls to pull off a shock. Personally, I'll be delighted if we escape with a draw. Should we lose, my son and heir, a Chesterfield supporter, will be homeless in the street by the time I get back from the pizzeria.

Not at all optimistic about this fixture or come to think of it any future fixture if we play as we have done for the lat three months. Chesterfield have a good squad and are overdue a win and will not have to raise their game much to overcome our very mediocre midfield. Plenty of justified criticism after Saturday so it will be interesting to see how the team , Alan Knill, the football club and the dwindling supporters respond. For certain we will work hard and run around a lot but right now we need so much more than that.

There is something about being the underdog, makes victory that much sweeter and defeat more bearable, probably easier mentally for the team to raise their game...

My friend Clive supports Newcastle, Darlo, Carlisle and a million other clubs but his favourite German side is Hannover 96 and he was there for the derby against Eintracht Braunschweig on Friday. He tells me it was pretty bad, but he saw Wolfsburg v Borussia Dortmund and then Osnabruck v Duisburg as well and he enjoyed both of those. I take it that Frankfurt Gull chose Braunschweig because of their yellow and blue strip, ja?

The most remarkable thing about Clive - well, it isn't really but what the heck - is the red-and-white scarf he wears to Bramall Lane and the blue-and-white one he wears to Hillsborough.
He's got a wonderfully international take on club football and immediately makes comparisons between teams wearing similar colours. Last week we were watching a game in the Midland Alliance and he turned to me to say "shut your eyes and imagine you're watching Bordeaux". Well, sorry, it's not possible. We're in bleedin' Loughborough and there's only ninety people here.
Oh dear, I'm a Philistine. I should have a favourite team in every country in Europe if not the world. But I can't be bothered. Nor do I care who is bottom of the league in Belgium.
But I am getting withdrawal symptoms for the Sunday Janner sports supplement. Plainmoor too but those closer to the action may warn me this is misguided.

Being Welsh and a Green Bay Packers fan, the last couple of weeks has been disastrous - Torquay out of the cup, Wales losing to South Africa in the rugby union and going out of the Rugby League World Cup with defeats to the renowned powerhouses of Italy, the USA and the Cook Islands, and the Packers losing their star quarterback to injury and their play-off and Super Bowl hopes seemingly going up in smoke as a result

My only other team is FC St Pauli - not very original, but like the best music hipsters, I was into them before it became fashionable! They've got Hannover 96 tonight...

My son's U15's football team is sponsoring tomorrow's match so I'm looking forward to the match and the pre-match carvery. It is interesting to note that out of the entire 22 squad, my son is the only regular who attends Torquay's home games. One or two others go occasionally and that's about it. Their main knowledge about Torquay's players is gained from their gaming on FIFA. Apparently Pearce is our best player on FIFA so he is the most popular. It's a similar story with the dads - I'm the only regular supporter at Plainmoor. It must be difficult to run a lower league team with this level of local enthusiasm.
As for tomorrow's match- Ijust just hope knill is taking our club in the right direction. There have been an awful amount of comings and goings in the last few weeks of players. Are the newer players really any better? What are all these changes doing to our team spirit and team morale? After last week's limp performance against Rochdale I have my doubts but let's see what happens in the "bread and butter" of the league tomorrow.

Droylsden Played17 Won 0 Drawn 2 Lost 15 For 9 Against 63 Points 2 And yet it's only 5 years since this epic contest against Saturday's opponents Droylsden have fallen apart. I saw them at the start of the season. They were dreadful then and have got worse. And, whilst Chesterfield played Droylsden in the cup, we faced them in league games. I was at the game up there one midweek evening; a match witnessed by one of the smallest gatherings ever to watch one of our first-team games (post-1927 anyway). Proof that, sadly, Torquay United are not a big draw in East Manchester. My most vivid memory of the evening is of the team coach arriving and my mate from Witheridge enquiring of Danny Stevens' injured knee. The answer was pithy: "it facking hurts, mate, it facking hurts!"

These Northerners don't travel well and won't be able to source decent black pudding for brekkers in Torbay, so should be a stroll in the park. Torquay United 4 Chesterfield 0

Black pudding is a Lancashire dish (and yet Rochdale managed OK without it last week!). Chesterfield is in Derbyshire where chips and mushy peas are the number 1 treat and there are plenty of chip shops in Torquay. We're in trouble!

I regularly frequent a cafe in the Hope Valley which serves both a full English breakfast and a full Derbyshire version. The Derbyshire dish includes oat cakes which I've normally associated with Staffordshire. Are they a Derbyshire delicacy too?
