That's a splendid view of the London Road ground on the cover of that Peterborough programme. They'd been in the League for six or seven years by then and the press was still favourably talking of Posh's potential. They looked fair set but would soon come crashing down after being caught out making illegal payments.
An intriguing explanation for Peter Deakin's transfer to Bradford Park Avenue: "Peter wanted part-time in the north where both he and his wife belong". Ah, that sense of belonging! But revealing too that some Football League clubs were still happy to engage part-timers.
Something of interest in the minutiae of Posh's honours board: Awarded Sunday Mirror Giant Killer Cup 1964/65. That would have been after beating Salisbury, QPR, Chesterfield, Arsenal and Swansea to reach the sixth round.
If only we'd beaten Tottenham....,

With Barton Downes recently referring to the fine QPR side that won the League Cup, I couldn't help noticing that the 'Guest Spot' here is devoted to Victor Crowe. The only thing I knew about Vic was that he managed the Aston Villa side that also reached a League Cup final, although unlike Rangers a few years earlier, they didn't go home with the cup. Having checked it seems that Vic was also Villa manager when they had to suffer the indignity of playing third division football against opponents such as Argyle back in the early 1970's. An after school excursion up to Plymouth on a week night was a rare event indeed, and as far as I recall there were ever only two of them. To see Vic Crowe's Aston Villa and to watch Bobby Charlton in action as Player Manager of Preston North End.  Is Vic There ?....yes he's on the cover ! Good to see that the Sunday Mirror acknowledged Peterborough's F.A Cup run to the 6th Round  What a pity that the Quarter Final at Stamford Bridge proved to be one step too much for them. Perhaps that was partly due to Vic not being there for much of the game as he had to leave the field on a stretcher.  |
