The start of this game sticks in my memory. It was a 3pm Sat kick off. Most were 7.30pm at that time. I remember standing on the pop side as we kicked off playing towards the cowshed with a lanky young new winger in front of me. At 6 foot he looked out of place and I thought WTF have we got here? From the kick off the ball came out immediately to Keith Curle just signed from Bristol Rovers on loan. He beat one or two cut inside and unleashed a thunderbolt and scored about 1 min into his debut. Rioch signed him after the game for £5k

I was living in South West France that season so only saw two of Curle’s 18 games for us. Sold on to Bristol City within four months. Converted to a centre back and played for England!

Thanks for posting that. Very interesting. I'd completley forgotten how good the goalkeeper played that day too! I must be confused about Curles goal. I don't doubt Dave Thomas. I'm convinced he had a thunderbolt of a shot straight from the kick off but obviously didn't score until 5 mins. I just realised it was 40 years ago so I guess that is why my memory isn't clear. I'm ashamed to say I was doubtful Keith was a winger as he lined up right in front of me on the touchline. More like a donkey and we joked about it. Then from the kick off he took off like a racehorse, completely surprising me and the Bury players. It was so unexpected but it quickly became clear he was class. Skilful and very quick and he wouldn't be with us long. I always wondered why rovers let him go and just found the following article by Ian Hollaway. Apparently they were both apprentices at the Gas. Good friends and both right wingers. Holloway took his place. Keith used to frustrate the hell out of me in training, often appearing to just go through the motions. During one pre-season the squad went and trained at the Blaise Castle Estate in Bristol. Bobby Gould was the manager and he split us into three groups for some sharp runs, beginning on an incline and circling a clump of trees before returning to the start point. It wasn’t far, but we all had to do the run four times, each one taking around a minute and 20 seconds. Keith was the fastest thing I had seen on two legs, yet when we compared times at the end of the stint, mine were faster than his. I had been giving it my all, while he had cruised around in second gear, knowing his times would still be competitive. Things like that used to infuriate me. One day we had a chat and Keith said words to the effect that he was disillusioned and thinking about an alternative career. I told him in no uncertain terms that he didn’t realise how lucky he was to be playing football for a living. I also said he wasn’t pushing himself hard enough or wanting to be successful enough. I felt he was only doing enough in training and wasn’t showing the desire to make the most of his assets. Soon after, he joined Torquay United and as he says “the penny dropped” over what I had said to him. He approached his football with renewed zest and the rest, as they say, is history. Having moved on to Bristol City, where Terry Cooper produced a stroke of genius in converting him to a centre-back, Keith went on to play for Reading, Wimbledon, Manchester City and eventually England, winning three senior caps, none of them in his best position. www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/ian-holloway-column-battling-keith-3920445Thanks Paul.
