How many millions watched Argentina play out a dull 0-0 draw with Holland? One hundred years ago today, not quite as many people watched Argentina play out a dull 0-0 draw with ..... Exeter City. With all the Brazilmania, it is sometimes forgotten that City's 1914 trip was primarily to Argentina - the Brazilian leg was tagged on the end at the last minute. Of course, history has magnified the Brazil trip as containing the first ever match played by the national team. Previous "Brazilian XIs" had been all from Rio de Janeiro or all from Sao Paulo. The Argentinians were relatively old hands when they took on City. They had already played 36 full internationals (33 v Uruguay and 3 v Chile). The Exeter game was still a little bit historic as it was the first time that Argentina had avoided defeat against an English professional team having lost to Southampton, Nottingham Forest, Tottenham Hotspur and Swindon. It would be another ten years before Argentina actually beat an English side - a 3-0 win against ...... Plymouth Argyle. www.rsssf.com/tablesa/arg-unoff-intres.html

So are you telling us that our club is the only one of the three major Devon sides not to have faced Argentina in Argentina? That's disgraceful; another example of us lagging behind and showing little imagination or ambition. Well, I'm sorry to say Torquay United, it's probably too late now. But seriously, is it four times that we have left this island? Once to Germany, twice to Ireland, once to Jersey? Good grief, have Torquay United ever made it to the Isle of Wight? Does Portsmouth count? These "foreign travels" have been documented on TFF. Have we explored the non-British opposition we've faced at Plainmoor or anywhere else? I'm struggling to think of our most recent overseas opponent.

I'm struggling to think of our most recent overseas opponent. I stand to be corrected but i think we go back almost twenty years since we last played foreign opposition at Plainmoor. A certain Rodney Jack caught the eye that evening when we played Lambada in 1995...

One or two "names" in that programme line-up for the Lambada game.
Paul Moulden's best days were behind him at Manchester City and Oldham Athletic. Rather than sign for us, he went to Rochdale without much success.
Paul Wimbleton, mainly associated with Cardiff City, was long finished as a Football League player. He moved on to play in Ireland, China, North America and as far afield as Merthyr Tydfil.
Kevin Millard has been described as both the manager and owner of Lambada. I'm not sure if the club even exists these days. From what is online it appears Lambada may have been formed as the Barbarian franchise in a short-lived Carribean Professional League. Lambada most likely disappeared, along with the league, not too long after their visit to Plainmoor.

We should be looking to getting Bayer Leverkausen to Plainmoor before the start of the 2017/2018 season, to mark the 50th anniversary of our 1-1 draw with them in Germany. Having secured the away goal, we only need to keep a clean sheet to win over the two legs! All too much trouble I guess, better get used to Welling United, Braintree Town, Eastleigh, and Dover for a while. Bayer Leverkausen? Even bloody Rochdale are out of our sights these days!
