Less than a fortnight until the start of the season and the last chance to fine tune the side. Personnel wise, the squad is more or less complete with Hargreaves just trying to sign O'Achie up front and the left back area unfilled with maybe Cruise now likely to be signed? Pearce is still struggling with that ankle injury so MacDonald will step in there, showing signs of the form that he had with us previously.
I will be going to this one as have a few days off and after the Mrs suggested a day out with the kids in East Devon on Tuesday, easy to compromise by going a tad further to Dorset, stay a bit later by throwing in a pub meal and cap off the day by watching the local football team -perfect!

cruise worries me as our number one left back,to me he hasnt improved at all,in an area where we have been weak for ages.Otherwise some interesting signings.

Clearly a technically good footballer but seems to lack that certain something (positional awareness?) to give me confidence in him. Shame Cargill is not returning, maybe another loanee may be brought in if cruise doesn't cut it in the first few games. Likewise the right full back, Tonge or Thompson could potentially be a weak link? However with pearce, downes and MacDonald we have three excellent centre halves who should be able to cope with most forward lines in the conference...

Don't forget MacDonald had a season at right back for Salisbury last term.

If we have Pearce/Downes partnership and then MacDonald at right back we will certainly have some useful headers of the ball in both boxes.

A bizarre chain of events at work ended up with me being in Weymouth at 1pm today: a place i've never been to in my life! Sadly I had to be back in Exeter for three but found time to have a chat with the groundsman, do a quick lap of the pitch and take a few snaps on my phone. The surface was parched and in desperate need of water. If i won the toss tonight i would definitely bat first.

Hmm, a nice day out spoiled by 90 minutes of football in a game where we were very poor, particularly in the first half and Weymouth grew in confidence throughout.Nice to see Sillsy again and McPhee signed his contract on the pitch before the game started! In a spot of humour the match sponsor was falwty towers, which our team tried to live up to. Will post my thoughts on the game a bit later.

Yes, I noticed the pitch looked very dry and from my position, high up on the half way line, in one of the match sponsor seats, I noticed that there were a numbers of circular fairy ring patches as well.
I thought Weymouth started slowly with a loose ball at the back nearly letting Benyon in. Also Briscoe, let fly from range with a shot that went narrowly wide, something that he repeated in the second with more success. Other than that, we were poor, unable to get much passing going with no outlets and Weymouth were able to gradually impose their game. However, their goal should never have been. A through ball saw Seabright come right to the edge of the area to collect it and although marginal, was given handball by the lino. From the resulting free kick, the ball was knocked right for a hard low shot that took a slight deflection.
In the second, we started better and Downes was unlucky not to score from a corner. He created the assist a short time later when a long ball in was nodded back to Briscoe who cracked a shot from outside the area into the bottom right hand corner! Game on, or so I thought....
Weymouth were able to counter attack shortly later when an attack on the right was not stopped by Cruise allowing a free cross with Seabright at the near post allowing a tap in.We were still in it and Hargreaves started to ring the changes. However, better players could not turn the tide. Downes was lucky to only pick up a yellow when he fouled their player on a through ball which he could not keep up with. Also, at fault f the third goal when easily outpaced by their winger and his ball to their striker just inside the area was fortunately deflected in off MacDonald from the resulting shot.
So, our first significant defeat and although a number of players were rested or came on too late to affect the result, Hargreaves nay have learnt a lot more about his team today than any of the other wins!

Someone I know who went to the match for his birthday "treat" with his dad singled out the following players who were paricularly poor - Seabright, Downes, Cruise and Benyon. I know it was only a friendly but I hope the players realise the great deal of effort some fans go through to get to the games only to be badly let down. Let's hope this is not a common feature of the coming season otherwise we will be in the bottom half.
