After an appalling previous season at home, we get to start our first home game of the campaign against a new side for us, the history of this club can be seen HERE as kindly linked in the Gateshead thread by Frankfurt! After such a rapid rise, Welling have a relatively small fan base and an attendance of 611 on the opening day of the season is pretty minimal and I dread to think how many they get on a mid week match in the middle of the winter! They have had a few problems up front with Charles Penny out injured long term and Kieran St Aime suspended for the opening three games of the season. Into the breach they have signed Afolabi Obafemi from Dagenham, he made 20 appearances last year but not against us. Also, they have made a loan signing from Oxford in the form of Tyrone Marsh, with just a handful of sub appearances for them. Both started on Saturday but didn't score in the 1 -1 draw with Telford, despite their opponents going down to nine men early in the second half. Interestingly, Telford's first half sending off was none other than fleeting Torquay trailist Poku so maybe a lucky escape there? Not sure how Hargreaves will react to Saturday's loss and may keep changes to a minimum but changes will probably be needed sooner or later. I quite liked Jon's thoughts on the Gatehead thread and if Cameron, Briscoe and Ajala can all start, so much the better and can also elevate Chappell who deserved to be on the bench at least IMO. Here we go again....

Is it a bit too early in the season to say this is a "must win game!" Goodness knows what crowd we will get on Tuesday...probably less than the 2000 mark after last Saturdays effort, and the almost total lack of away support we can expect this season!
Interesting season ahead me thinks!

It'll be interesting to see how many changes are made in the light of Saturday's performance.
Too many changes too soon can look like panic, but on the other hand if it is broke then fix it.
In fairness, making the most of available resources is not so much a sign of madness as living in the real world.
It would be great for us if we could ship out half a dozen players, stop paying their wages and bring in superior replacements. We can't.
So CH has quite a few choices between players who might be good enough but might not quite be ready and players who aren't quite good enough.
Relying on youth must be the way forward, but you have to be careful not to throw too many in at once. We need a good sprinkling of experience, but we lack confidence in quite a lot of the experienced players we have.
Seabright, Thompson, Hutchings, Ives, Richards and Ajala in for Rice, Tonge, Downes, Cruise, Harding and Benyon isn't going to happen.
I think I'd risk two or three of those changes though.
I've got a feeling Ives is ready and I don't rate Cruise. Downes might look less vulnerable as a result.
I've said before it is a toss-up between Richards and Harding, but I reckon Richards has more aggression and energy - which is what you need in a middle two.
I'd also leave out Benyon and go with either Ajala or Yeoman. I think either of those would carry just as much attacking threat and provide a better option to fill in as an extra midfielder id needed.
If Pearce were fit, he would obviously play - either Downes making way, or Tonge dropping out and MacDonald switching to right back.
I would not be surprised if there are fewer changes than I have suggested above.

Interesting season ahead me thinks! No, it's not to early. I have the same thoughts. No points from 2 games will start to attack the fragile optimism currently surrounding the squad. There has been plenty of comment that some of the players are a bit lacking in various certain areas but we are a Conference club with no money effectively so we have to get behind the players we have. If they do lose tomorrow, there is no point in getting on their backs, as has already started in some quarters; encouragement is always the more productive option.

Big game - already many will be making up there minds and ready to jump and after two seasons of dreadful home performances the minnows Welling Utd come to town to take a thrashing. Expect to see a response after Saturday both in effort and play.

Expect to see a response after Saturday both in effort and play. I've been expecting that for the last 18 months, only to finish the day disappointed!

Hopefully I will get to the match tonight. I have not seen us win since 4-2 against Cheltenham last season - a long, long time ago. The last 7 home matches I've been to, we've lost the lot, the last 6 by 1-0. In fact every game I've seen under Hargreaves we've lost. So will I see a win tonight? Don't bet on it, I say. My confidence in the team is still rock bottom.
I agree with Jon's suggestions above to make some changes from Saturday. I hope Hargreaves shows some bottle in doing that. We need to push forward into the future and not dwell on the past. And that means trying out new players

Yes! Kept looking at the scoreboard and almost it was a shock to see us have a good lead. Welling were no great shakes but had a bit of a go in the second half. Think the team needed that as a confidence boost.
