Disappointed about the FA Cup, but it can't quite match the magic of the Devon Bowl, can it?
Looking forward to this one.
Will be very interesting to see what kind of a starting eleven we come up with - particularly as there is no first team game on Saturday.
Berry and Ives at full back - getting in some match practice ahead of Barnet?

Is the whole ground open or just the seating area?
You still going Jon?

I was hoping tonight would be about scoring a few goals and getting some confidence back. How wrong can I be? I hear it was 0-0 at full time and we lose on pens!! This with a strong team out? I await any views of those that were there. What's happening??!

All 'n all very, very poor - doubly poor as I reversed into a lampost!!

Thought Ajala and Ofori-Acheampong brightened things up in the second half and we dominated in terms of chances with their keeper making a number of decent saves from mainly longish range shots or which went narrowly wide. Ho hum ....

Interesting formation experiment this evening - but little else of interest.
We played a 3-5-2 / 5-3-2 in the first half. Rice in goal. MacDonald in the middle with Parcell to his right and Downes to his left. Berry and Ives as wing backs. Harding holding midfielder with Richards and Chaney either side. Benyon and Bowman up top.
Reverted to 4-4-2 second half with Ajala, on for Parcell, playing wide left and Chaney moving out to wide right. Afori-Acheampong also on for Bowman at half-time.
MacDonald stretchered off in the second half with Cruise coming on as a centre-back. Seabright and Yeoman unused subs.
The theory that formations make little or no difference gained some ground as we were equally uninspiring in both formations. Tiverton did supply the kind of fiercely competitive opposition that can make Bowl games useful workouts. Unfortunately, we won't be making the trip to Willand for another useful workout.
Harding, Richards and Ajala converted pens but Chaney had his saved. Ricey saved one, so Afori-Acheampong stepped up with us at 3-4 match point down and hit possibly the worst penalty ever - straight up and into orbit.
The Devon Bowl dream is over for another year.
Let's hope MacDonald's injury is not too serious.

Thanks all of you for your reports. Sounds a bit grim with Macdonald's injury topping things off badly! Hope you came off better than the lamppost chelstongull....

I found the penalty ball on my way to the railway station. Well, that's not quite factually correct but you get the drift.
Jon's right. The most significant part of the evening was the tactical experiment. Or at least it was until the sight of Angus MacDonald being carried off.
The idea of playing three centre-backs - with an extra man in midfield - sounded like a formation in waiting. We're being overrun in midfield and, in theory anyway, have the personnel to make another approach happen. I'm not sure how much was decided last night. Barnet away next of course.
But it was a serious experiment and a serious lineup. Who would have expected Bowman and Downes to start? With both Richards and MacDonald to boot? Cruise, Ajala and Ofori-Acheampong all on the pitch at the end.
The selection clearly wasn't a reflection on the fact that everything is hunky-dory on the playing side at Plainmoor. And, in this way, the game was well-timed: plausible opposition on a decent pitch when, in this competition, it could have been less-suitable opponents on an inferior surface.
And, with the opposition keen, this was probably as worthwhile an exercise as a reserve/development type friendly against a Football League or Conference club. Those fixtures, as we know, are in desperately short supply. Argyle, Portsmouth, Bristol City, Cheltenham and Newport are playing each other in a league cup competition soon. That'll count them out for a while. Our first-team midweek fixtures don't necessarily correlate with theirs anyway. It's a problem.
Consequently progress in the Devon St Luke's may have been useful solely to provide additional fixtures. It would have been Willand away in the next round. Then there would have been a chance of playing Buckland, Argyle or Bideford. You wouldn't be desperate to play these games but, in the circumstances, they'd be potentially useful.
Instead nothing. Instead last night proved to be another opportunity for a Torquay United team to seemingly play without much direction or confidence. Tiverton did fine; Torquay did not. The management may have learned plenty from last night; the result may have been of secondary importance. But most of those present last night probably went home less happy than when they arrived. Oh dear.

That must be the worst penalty I have ever seen for a Torquay player last night. Although everyone could see chaney was going to miss I thought Duane being a striker would get it on target at least....................fortunately the top of the family stand kept the ball in the grund. Otherwise yes would have beaten Barton to the railway station!!!
