After winning at Ashton Gate we had a new year visit to the cup holders to look forward to. I was sweating on a morning pitch inspection i seem to remember but what a great day even though we lost. We played so bloody well that day and there was a massive Torquay following on the away terracing......

This game was discussed on BPIR, earlier in the week. An amazing performance and that report by DT, writing at his best, brought it all back.

I love these Cyril era cuttings. We "out-thought, out-fought and outplayed" the current FA Cup holders. It's true - we did.
But for an injury time equaliser, we would have been visiting places like Runcorn, Wealdstone and Fisher Athletic.
With Cyril we visited White Hart Lane, Ashton Gate, Highfield Road, Hillsborough, Molineux, Wembley.
You had to pinch yourself to believe it was really happening!

Indeed - and I think it is because of that stark prospect that we just escaped (after 3 of our worst seasons ever) that Cyril's 87/88 side remains my favourite of all-time, even though it blew automatic promotion, and then messed up the play-offs, just like Hodges and Ling's teams, and didn't even manage what Leroy and Smith/Impey's team did by getting promoted - yet, head and shoulders above all others, that is the team I look back on most fondly.

Yes the Mr Knowles team was something special. The best thing since the early 1970's and Phoenix like after the previous season. I was at the Coventry game with 3 other Torquay supporters, but in a home section of standing terracing just to the right of the Torquay away fans. We weren't wearing colours but it became clear to people around us that we were Torquay people, but instead of getting any stick there were loads of complimentary comments about our team. I think some of the home fans were a little disappointed when they got a penalty. Perhaps looking forward to a few days by the sea and a cream tea at Mrs Miggins Tea Rooms! Still can't believe Dave Caldwell's overhead kick didn't go in. From where I was standing I thought it was a goal as soon as it left his boot. I suppose if we had won, just like Scotland hailed themselves as World Champions when they beat England 3-2 in 1967, we would have been the FA Cup holders!
