I don't how much money there was in sweets in post-war Britain - they were still under ration at the time - but Lovell's Athletic were about to have an excellent season when they visited Plainmoor back in August 1947. The club founded by a Newport confectionery manufacturer finished sixth in the Southern League and won the Welsh Cup.
Harry Clarke, Lovell's number five, was aged twenty-four at the time. London-born himself Clarke joined Tottenham Hotspur within eighteen months of this match. At Spurs he went straight into the team, won a championship medal in 1951 and played once for England.

A cracking game - we lost 4-3. The cup first round was on a league basis that year and we finished bottom with two points from eight games behind Yeovil, Exeter, Lovell's and Bath. Of course, both Lovell's and Bath were in the wartime Football League from 1942 to 1945 - alongside Aberaman, Bristol City, Cardiff and Swansea. Lovell's Athletic - a great name from the past. This programme was from their first season in the Southern League (1947/48) after the Second World War in which they played up to and including 1958/59. I have come across their name in research of amateur internationals as they regularly provided members of the Welsh team in the post-War years.
Senior members of the forum may remember one Lovell's Welsh international amateur cap - Idwal Robling. Idwal won a BBC competition to find a new football commentator for the BBC team for the 1970 Mexico World Cup. He had a long career with the BBC in Wales covering all sports. I think he was a teacher by training but worked for a short time at the Lovell's factory. |
