The East Devon League (this is the one that was the Exeter and District League founded in 1901 and changed its name on absorbing the defunct East Devon Senior League in 1908) was ahead of its time. It pioneered the pyramid system with North Devon and Torquay and District Leagues having their champions (South Molton and Babbacombe) promoted in 1908. It also decided to ask for bonds from clubs with dodgy finances way before the Conference (or National League) cottoned on. Torquay United pulled out of the East Devon Senior League in 1907/08 after failing to raise a team to travel to Friernhay. St Luke's College, 15th Brigade Royal Artillery and Exmouth United all suffered the expense of a trip to Torquay without cashing in on a return league game - although we did eventually visit Friernhay for a friendly. Exmouth United got the hump and made sure they got their £2 of flesh. Torquay United had also let them down the previous season - conceeding the points and having to make a financial settlement. Neither Torquay United nor Dawlish paid the bond. United played in the Torquay and District League in 1908/09 (alongside Babbacombe and Ellacombe's reserves), winning the title and setting their record highest score - 22-0 against Torquay Tramways.
