With the squad taking shape, this is the first chance to see some of the new signings that Cox has brought in and will be interesting to see how we initially line up...

Looks like new boys James Hurst and Tyrone Marsh have found the back of the net for a 2-1 half time lead!

The bulk of the match was played with the same side that started. I had no idea Odofin was such a big lad but I think he looked slightly more accomplished than his defensive partner who had an essence of carthorse about him.
It was quite a physical niggly encounter, an enjoyable game to watch with some decent moments. I'm sure the manager learnt a lot but I am not sure what I made of the new players.
Spiess looked steady in goal. He could do little about either goal, especially the Tivvy 2nd goal which was a screamer good enough to grace any ground (Dan Smith?).
Hurst and Butler as full-backs looked a reasonable pairing. As for Shepherd and Orlando, nothing really stood out for me. Marsh scored and got on the end of a few crosses.
Both Torquay 1st half goals were virtual carbon-copies of each other, crosses that were virtually bundled in, whilst the winner came in the 2nd half, almost immediately after their stunning equaliser, when goal-machine, Ashley Yeoman got his 10th of pre-season when deftly rounding the keeper and slotting home.
Fairhurst is seriously out of shape - he makes Louis Briscoe look positively lean - and he will need to do more when it comes to the real world to be effective.
Tivvy had a couple of good players. Their no.15 looked tidy, despite is mis-timed tackle on Chaney, that had the more vocal of the TUFC away following screaming an endless stream of 'f words' at the ref and lino, at the top of their voice. A little embarrassing.
There were enough positive moments to suggest that Paul Cox might be assembling a competitive squad - it was certainly a much better performance than the game at the same venue, under Alan Knill, two years ago - a very drab game that summed up the season that followed.

Far tougher opposition than Galmpton and Dartmouth - a decent workout. Did MacDonald have surgery on his knee over the summer? Does that explain his non-appearance? Ryan Bowman was sat on the terracing behind the goal on his mobile phone throughout the first half - moved round to sit in front of our directors for the second. It is interesting that Cox has stuck to a straight 4-4-2 throughout all three games so far. With two attacking players wide in Murombedzi and Briscoe that leaves us stretched in midfield - virtually a 4-2-4. A lot of shouting at the back four to keep pushing up when we had the ball. Three trialists in the starting XI and I wasn't too impressed by them. Spiess didn't seem as assured and commanding as Rice ( ?!!!!). Was it just an off-day? Not much to choose between Maduako and Odofin who both looked a bit raw. With Odofin under contract, I wouldn't see Maduako as adding much - as long as we can stretch to a more experienced signing (Geohagen or AN other). Lewis seemed the least impressive of the four strikers on show. Most impressive performers for me were the full backs Hurst and Butler who both seemed to get up and down a lot. I also quite like Jamie Richards. Didn't he play centre back for Argyle? If so, I would see him as good centre-back / left back cover. Topliss is a loyalgull recommend! went to the conference play off final, watched from the Grimsby stand.Got friendly with sam topliss who has just been released by hull city,a right back who has good pedigree, was on loan at north ferriby united last season and played in their fa trophy final win over Wrexham. He said he would be happy moving to someone like torquay,so the players are out there that would move too our area It will be interesting to see if we stick to 4-2-4 against stronger opposition. Starting lineup: Spiess Hurst Maduako Odofin Butler Murombedzi Young C Richards Briscoe Lewis Marsh Finishing lineup: Spiess Topliss Maduako Odofin J Richards Briscoe Duke Ball Chaney Fairhurst Yeoman

Did MacDonald have surgery on his knee over the summer? Does that explain his non-appearance? I think he had surgery before the end of the season as I saw him hopping around when we had that nice sunny spell in April.
