I seem to remember a long coach journey up to North Wales for the last time we won at the Racecourse. Mind you it was worth it to watch that team...

Only two stars for the Dude? Surely shome mistake. In fact - just one star. Seems rather harsh marking for a team winning away at The Racecourse. Although look at the attendance.

No John Impey - injured or suspended?
I'm guessing that McNichol shuffled to centre-back and Dude played right wing back in a 5-2-1-2 formation with Loram in the hole.
Or did we just go for a flat 4-4-2 with Dude right and Lors left midfield?

No John Impey - injured or suspended? John Impey was out for a couple of months with an ankle injury that season but was back by the time we played our next opponents Halifax. This will bring back memories for anyone who was there on that Bank Holiday afternoon back in 1988...

Yes I was there.
Made a last minute decision to go and would of driven up but drove over to Plainmoor and luckily there was a spare seat on the single coach that went.
Don't remember 100`s of fans being there as Dave Thomas mentions, I would of thought less then 100.
But I certainly remember the thunderstorm.

This will bring back memories for anyone who was there on that Bank Holiday afternoon back in 1988... I had forgotten how long Impey was out for. He missed twelve league games in total including seven in a row between playing on 16 January and 11 March. Pretty sure Jimmy Mac did fill in at centre-back. What a great win at Halifax - leaving us only needing one point from our last two games to be certain. As good as promoted....

I remember so much about that day at Halifax - at the end I really thought we were going to get promoted. Something, after the Webb era, I never thought I would see, and that league table showing us 2pts clear of Bolton with a game in hand and +4 goal difference is a painful reminder of how badly we threw it all away. That must be the best team we have had that never got promoted - better than the team, 3 years later that DID get promoted, much better. I find the promotion miss that year still upsets me now, 27 years later, as historic league tables just do not tell the stories that memories do and anyone looking on now would see we finished 5th. Not that we threw it away.
I suppose it is the way in 68 older fans will remember the collapse that cost promotion to Division 2 - one many conspiratory theorists think was thrown deliberately.
