After 3 games without scoring, we need to reverse that stat if we are to maintain recent progress and our cause will be tremendously helped if Nathan Blissett is back from injury!
Unfortunately, I am unable to make the match today as helping lead a 16 mile romp across the Moors today but will have my fingers crossed for the boys in yellow!

Indeed, the three draws have only really kept us in touch with the "Great Escape". A win today is a must in my book, as games are starting to run out. Still dry in the bay but chilly, so wrap up warm and cheer the boys on!!!!

It will be interesting to see how we juggle our resources up front.
Three out of six from Harrad, Wright, Verma, Allen, Ajala and Blissett.
Important to avoid burning anyone out as we have two games a week. Harrad and Wright both looked a bit jaded on Tuesday.

As Jon reminds us, it's still a busy schedule for a while yet. A few players who would greatly benefit from sitting out a game or two will have to stay on the treadmill a little longer. Harrad and Wright do both look jaded, but whereas a jaded Harrad will still do all the same things as before, only more slowly, a jaded Wright becomes an immobile spectator.
I see little option other than to select Blissett & Harrad as our starting front two. If, ideally, we can establish a lead, Wright could come on to replace tired legs in the last half an hour. Iffy Allen can be effective against opposition who will push up thinking they can win the game, or who have to push numbers forward in search of a equaliser. That sort of space to run in to probably won't be on offer early doors against Southport, who surely wouldn't be too disappointed to leave Plainmoor with a point, so I can't imagine that Allen will make the starting eleven.
A clear week after this one, and what better way to go into it than off the back of a win.

Great result today. Let's hope Blissett stays fit.What an immense contribution he has made since joining on loan!Further good news is that Aldershot Chester Guiseley and Southport are all making a good effort to join the relegation battle. Welcome to all of them!

A priceless win for the Gulls and joyous scenes at the end! After all we achieved 3 points. The downside - it was a dreadful performance and we barely deserved anything. It was disjointed, passes went astray, Torquay seemed to be second to the ball and we barely had a shot all game. It was like a throwback to our dismal performances earlier this season. However, one quality move produced our goal and at the other end MacDonald was a colossus at the back throwing his body on the line and good old Moore in goal kept up his remarkable clean sheet record with another assured performance. The only blemishes for those players were MacDonald's 14th. booking and Moore's distribution was often erratic. Crowd 1,783 at a surprisingly cold Plainmoor, 33 from Southport, sponsors MOTM Ajala.
Torquay opted again to attack the Family Stand in the 1st. half and were kitted in all white to avoid Southport's florescent green. The other bizarre decision was us having no defenders on the bench. I do feel a little sorry for Big Ex and it seemed ridiculous not having any defenders on the bench. That was particularly worrying when MacDonald went off for treatment in the first half and got knocked out in the second half. Torquay just could not get going and Southport were playing like the home team. Our only effort in the 1st half was near the end after good play from Richards on the by-line, Blissett's tame shot was comfortably blocked. There were too many players having off-days like Ajala, Verma and Harrad. In fact you could include all our offensive players in that list. It does make you wonder as well whether Torquay's diamond formation is working. The returning Blissett understandably seemed off the pace. Luckily Southport were not that potent themselves and Torquay held them at arms length.
The second half improved slightly but it was still a poor show. Substitute Iffy Allen offered a bit of zip down the right and we made more in roads in Southport's half. But we did not look like scoring. Moore saved brilliantly coming off his line on a 1-on-1 for the clearest chance of the match. Then with 10 minutes to go, Richards fed the ball to Ajala who went on a dangerous run down the middle. The ball was fed to Butler on the left and his low delivery was scored at close range by Blissett. Torquay had got out of jail and manfully defended for the rest of the match.
The league table looks great tonight but let us not delude ourselves. Our performance level will need to go up significantly if we are to avoid the drop. We got away with it today but we will not against better opposition.

Win ugly is truly appropriate terminology for this game,it was rank horrible but 3 precious points at the end which in reality was all that this game was about

You have to go with your Intel on the opposition and try to adopt a format to deal with it. They came with a game spoiler and Kev managed to counter it, it's difficult to blow a team of spoilers away with our resources so Lord Kev should be praised for getting it correct enough to get all the points with clean sheets for the last four games! The second we get out of the drop zone people whine about quality! Ffs feck quality over results right know! Worry about quality next season!

Certainly not a pretty game to watch but when the opposition come prepared to try and dominate midfield it rarely turns into a spectacular performance. We managed to put the best move of the game together to get the goal, having also had a good chance on target in the first half, so I make that 2 shots on target Rob  Southport certainly seemed to be set up for gaining a point and to be honest, the midfield didn't really work in my eyes. Rax still looks good at the back of the diamond but Verma and Richards looked out of their depth and couldn't seem to win the ball with any regularity. I have to say I can see why Dover let Ajala go. I feel sorry for him because he looks like he has the attributes to make it but he really doesn't look good enough, even at this level. Bliss may have missed the last three matches but still popped up in the right place at the right time to tuck the ball away, having been winning most balls directed at him but struggling with the late arrival of support most of the time. Thought we looked improved with Wright in place of Harrad as he's a bit quicker. Iffy was well marshalled by his opposite number and didn't really get a lookin either... Still, three points in the bag and a game we could well have come away with nothing from before Christmas or last season. It takes us just above the point a game mark that was required for safety last season (Welling stayed up with 45 points last season) and I would say Kiddy and Welling are pretty much down now and I can see BW not getting to 46 points as well so that, in my opinion, just leaves one from the teams around us (probably from Chester downwards) that will drop. We still have games against 3 of them so in reality, our fate is now in our own hands, and you couldn't have said that back in January... |
