Although a regular league fixture from the 60s through to the end of the 80s, the last time Tranmere came down to Plainmoor was in 2004 during our brief foray into league 1 and resulted in a 1-2 loss for us. Now we are both two leagues below that level with Tranmere just holding on to a play off spot and ourselves just out of the dreaded drop zone!
It is good to have Wright available back up front again which gives us options in this area although I suspect Chaney may well keep his berth in the advanced midfield role for the first hour or so. Hopefully both Ajala and Allen will start out wide and continue the good work from Tuesday. Not sure whether Young will be back, possibly a game too early? I see Nico is extending Moore's loan and it is either him or Larcombe in the match day squad so I suspect he will get his place barring injury for the rest of the campaign.
Tranmere are under pressure to get into the play offs and need a strong finish to do so that suits us fine. They have a trio of injury doubts in Mekki, Hughes and Ridehalgh although Maynard is back for them after missing the defeat at Welling last week. James Norwood, formerly of Forest Green, playing at number 10 is by far and away their top scorer with 17 so far this campaign and was a good signing by Gary Brabin.

Good match to watch for the first hour. Deserved a point but as luck would have it, the other results went our way for a change.

Good game we did not deserve to lose, MacDonald was truly outstanding. Other results could have been worse so dust down, re-charge batteries and thrash Altringham! Journey home less ecstatic that it might have been.

Good match to watch for the first hour. Deserved a point but as luck would have it, the other results went our way for a change. I would fully agree. It took us about 20 minutes to get into the game as Tranmere looked a good quality side and dominated possession. Racchi looked our best player in the first half and worked hard with increasing effect in the middle of the path. Chaney had a very good shot that just went wide after running onto a headed knock on. Blissett had a good heading chance but was unable to direct on target and just maybe that was the difference? During injury time, Tranmere did get the ball into the net after Moore could not quite cut out a deep cross to the far post but it was directed in from a clearly offside position. Tranmere started well again in the second half but after making a defensive mistake and the ball was fed out to Blissett just inside the area but his shot was well saved by their keeper. We were unlucky to go behind in between two substitutions and a deep cross in was nicely looped over Moore - not sure if it could have been defended better? Tranmere then started to run down the clock and earned themselves a number of yellows in the process. Unfortunately, we were unable to get a head of steam up. We did have a number of corners with Wright being closest, flicking a header just wide. Right at the end, Young fired the ball in from a free kick which their keeper did well to get a boot on and that was that. Our level was still there in terms of performance and will have had more joy against lessor sides in this league.

Indeed, I would suggest that Tranmere are probably the pick of the sides that have visited us. They looked, for example, streets ahead of someone like Eastleigh. They were powerful and quick yet we totally matched for most of the game. I thought we lost our solidity when Racchi was replaced by Young as the 4-2-3-1 we played pretty much from the off looked to really suit us.

This was always a tricky looking fixture against the "big boys" of the National League and today the Gulls fell just short in the end. It was a decent performance and a decent match to watch and Torquay created enough decent chances to earn at least a draw. It was no disgrace losing to Tranmere today but we all know points are all that matter in this situation. Crowd a decent 2,264 with 300+ from Tranmere, sponsors MOTM going to another commanding display at the back from MacDonald.
Tranmere put Torquay on the back foot for the first 10 minutes or so and played some great one touch passing in their build up. Torquay were hanging on in there, just. Racchi in front of our back 4 was having a great game with his composure on the ball and accurate passing. In one instance a Tranmere player was about to pull the trigger in the box and would have probably have scored but Racchi got his toe in first and nick the ball away to safety. Verma has adapted to right back well and as the half wore on Torquay came into the game. Chaney had a couple of decent efforts with one long range effort just whistling over the bar. Allen put himself around and was a threat whenever he was on the ball, whereas our other winger Ajala generally messed up what he was attempting to do. He still put in a decent shift and tackled well at times. MacDonald had our best chance of the half and his far post header just whisked across the goal and wide.
Ironically Tranmere's goal came when Torquay were mainly on top when a header was powerfully planted in the corner of the net. Torquay used all their 3 subs in the 2nd. half and Racchi looked injured when he was replaced by Young. Chances came for Torquay, a Blissett shot was parried by their keeper, Davies. We had plenty of corners and crosses into the box and were "knocking on the Tranmere door". Even in added time a Young swerving free-kick was saved by the keepers legs and scrambled clear. It was harsh on Torquay, I've seen them play a lot worse and win and unlike the recent Eastleigh home match 0-1 defeat, today Torquay DID look like scoring.
We're looking a decent unit and today's bench looked strong regarding midfield and attacking options. We don't look like a relegation team anymore but let's hope we can pick up points soon, starting next Tuesday against Altrincham.

A crowd a little in excess of 2200 didn't witness the most scintillating of matches, but the Tranmere fans went home happy, while Gulls supporters were probably thankful that results elsewhere didn't make our position a great deal more perilous. It was probably a fair result although we did have a couple of chances to score; Blissett hit a shot wide during the first half, and an injury time Luke Young free kick caused panic and needed a good reaction save to preserve Tranmere's lead. We looked like a side that had put every ounce of their energy into defeating Chester in the week, whereas Tranmere legs seemed just that bit more sprightly. The visitors dominated the first quarter of an hour, often with good one touch inter-play. With Ajala and Iffy wide, and Chaney pushed well forward in support of Blissett, our central midfield didn't comprise of many yellow shirts. In contrast, Tranmere, being as good as their word in saying they'd be pushing forward as they needed the win, got plenty of men into central midfield as they executed some neat one touch exchanges which left us chasing shadows. Number 11, Lois Maynard, 'playing in the hole' found himself with time and space to thread balls through to top scorer Norwood or to the eventual scorer of the winning goal, Higdon. At the other end, and for most of the game, we struggled to penetrate the Tranmere defence, or to find a way around man mountain Steve McNulty. We gradually made the necessary adjustments and tightened up considerably, but going forward our crossing and shooting was poor. As the first 45 minutes concluded, we were the more relieved that it was still goal-less as it stood at Gulls 0 Rovers 0 At half time we heard about the proposed roof for the Disabled Fans section, before a Party Political soon followed as a spokesman for one set of 'boat rockers' attempted to distance themselves from another set of 'boat rockers'. Those more interested in the Club Chairman's take on things, will have noted his words in the programme: 'I would like to reiterate that at the present time we must concentrate on matters on-the-field above anything else. You can rest assured that we will keep you updated with developments when the time is right to do so'. Jimmy Aggrey, towering above Steve Breed, did the half time draw. No one appeared in order to participate in the crossbar challenge, so Jimmy had a go, and fittingly for an ex pro, hit the bar with his first attempt, enabling a Cancer charity to benefit financially. We were giving as good as we were getting in the second half, but with just under a quarter of an hour of second period gone, a good cross was swung over from in front of Bristow's bench, Michael Higson found space between our defence and met the ball with a header that had sufficient pace and direction to go beyond the grasp of the diving American. The 300 Tranmere supporters at that end celebrated in suitable fashion. A combination of the usual time wasting ensued, combined with the pettiness of modern officialdom that insists that if anyone goes to ground it has to be a free kick to one side or the other. A defeat but not a disasterous one (hopefully), and one that will most probably be quickly forgotten if we can win on Tuesday.

Surprised by the tone of the match report in the HE which suggested TQ were second best and a commanding Tranmere Rovers side powered their way to a win? Got to admit I didn't see the game that way - perhaps the reporter got the shirt colours muddled up?

Got to admit I didn't see the game that way - perhaps the reporter got the shirt colours muddled up? We had more shots 11-8, including on target 4-3 and I am sure if that late Young shot had gone in everyone would have said that was a fair result. Yep, Tranmere had some good quality but it was fair margins IMO.
