This was in the programme from the Mansfield match : Talk of the Anglo-Italian Cup reminded me that it introduced many English fans to the quaint Italian custom of showing their disgust by throwing cushions on the pitch. The habit had spread to the English Riviera by 1972 and ref David Smith had a cushion hurled at him from the grandstand as he left the pitch after handing County a dubious penalty, converted by World Cup star to be Don Masson, that robbed United of a much needed win as we battled to keep our survival hopes alive. Top refs reffed in the lower leagues in the good old days. Smith went on to referee that season's Cup Final (Clarke 1-0) and two years later bowed out after refereeing the infamous Manchester derby with the Law back-heeled goal as United were relegated.
