Wallace (Wally) Clark was a winger born in Jarrow in 1896. He made 77 league appearances between 1919 and 1927 for Middlesbrough, Leeds, Birmingham, Coventry and Barrow. The record books say that he signed for Torquay and made three appearances for United in the 1927-28 season. The record books are wrong. He played for Wanderers' reserves but never for their first team. He signed for Torquay United in the close season of 1927 at the age of 21. He played regularly for the reserves until February but was released in March without making a first team appearance. George Clarke was a half-back born in Nottingham in 1902. He played 66 league matches for Merthyr Town from 1925 to 1927. At the start of the 1927-28 season he joined Coventry City where he was to make a further five league appearances before being released. He joined Torquay United initially on trial in February 1928. As well as regular reserves appearances, George played three Football League matches for United at left-half.
