I think today is a must win or we are likely to go down. Hopefully a bumper crowd will come out and support the team.
Could be an interesting atmosphere......

Very important game, and like rjdgull I fear that anything less than a win would all but extinguish our hopes of staying up. It could be an interesting atmosphere, particularly if those militants and agitators instructed to watch the game from the Away fans section, still attempt to masquerade as Home Fans and infiltrate the sections now designated for Osborne Loyalists only. While it will give me no pleasure in alerting stewards to any Militants I see sneaking into home sections, I'll be quite prepared to assist in frog marching such miscreants down to the Away End. The time for treating them with kid gloves is surely over. With the battle lines now more firmly drawn than ever, you can understand why the Torquay United Official Supporters Club has beefed up it's initiation ceremony for new members. Receiving Clarke Osborne's firm and resolute handshake, while a pile of Guardians burn below, is just the sort of thing to inspire new members for the battle ahead. Good luck to Kev and the players, we need to get behind them from first minute to last, and hope that the scandalously timed Guardian distraction didn't cause a sleepless night for our players as they lay on their prison bunks.

Largest gate of the season, cracking atmosphere, massive support for Nico, plenty of action but can anyone tell me why the first "goal" was disallowed?

Great result. No exaggeration to say next two games the most important in the club's history. Hopefully we will get good support at both games. Those two late goals at Lincoln look like real sickeners now. Still hoping our goal difference will keep us up.

Largest gate of the season, cracking atmosphere, massive support for Nico, plenty of action but can anyone tell me why the first "goal" was disallowed? A very emotional afternoon, culminating in scenes of joy and relief at the final whistle. Not sure it will be enough though and the battle goes on at least until next weekend. Lets hope we can at least take it to the final day but with Dover having everything to play for as well its going to be a tough ask to even get a point. The disallowed goal was the best thing to happen to Williams and the team today and spurred us on. Williams was incensed at the late call from the lino who should have flagged and kept his flag aloft after the ball arrived to him in a ping pong manner. He was off side and coming back when the ball ricochet of a defender into his path and from there he went on and scored. I think it should have stood and Williams was riled and from that moment on he was a different player and deservedly scored that massive equaliser just before the break. For 35 minutes though we were pants and second best conceding a sloppy goal in the opening minutes. Williams up until the disallowed goal looked pretty much out of sorts., Keating being the only forward to impress with his movement and intelligent play. There is a real player in there I hope we can hang on to the lad hes just the type we will need next season where ever we end up. Reid on the other hand was wasteful and sloppy with the ball despite his usual high work rate. Head down as per usual for most of the first half though he did get his act together later in the game making some fine forward runs into the box and actually looking up before passing the ball Many very good performances in the second period when we finally got our act together though at 2-1 we rode our luck when Braintree hit the cross bar and a little later when Gallifuoco fouled their sub when he would have been clean in on goal. Well done GG. No doubt a professional foul that some refs may well have produced a red. The win though thoroughly deserved and so good to see the ground quite full for a change with the core of supporters who have stuck with it alongside those who had maybe had enoough but realised they cant get it out of their blood. Not best pleased with some of the juvenile chanting aimed at Clarke Osborne its not the best way to show your dis plaeasure by labeling him a pedophile or a c**t. We have our differences and he has dmonstrated scant regard for us but that really is scrapping the barrel.

Brilliant. Galvanised behind the excellent Observer expose, crowd, Manager and players were fully united today. A great win and another cup final next week at Dover. Any truth in the rumour Nico pinned up yesterday's barmpot club response in the changing room for a half time team talk that simply consisted of saying to the players, "F**k GI" as they went back out?

Largest gate of the season, cracking atmosphere, massive support for Nico, plenty of action but can anyone tell me why the first "goal" was disallowed? Listening to Nico post match he thought the ball ricocheted off two of their defenders playing Williams on side and a perfectly good goal. However, he went on to say the injustice of it galvanised the team and he thought there was only going to be one winner from there but a brave soul would have had to say that at the time....

What a great result today in front of 2500 + fans, shame we couldn't have picked up a point or two against Chester, Sutton, Guiseley etc all.
Thought that Williams was offside for that goal but surely the lino should have raised his flag before the players went to the centre circle to kick off. In fact he didn't raise his flag until he had spoken to the ref, surely that can't be right?

A fantastic second half performance and a thoroughly deserved 3-1 win full of guts and determination. Crowd a decent 2,580, it looked around 50 odd from Braintree. The atmosphere from the home crowd was up for it from the first minute knowing the importance of the match. Loads of chants from all home sides and chants of "Nicholson" from the Pop side. Nicholson clearly appreciated those chants and also tried his bit often raising his arms geeing up the crowd. Sponsors MOTM going to 2 goal king Williams who had another goal mysteriously chalked off by a very late decision in controversial circumstances.
Braintree edged the opening exchanges and had a series of dangerous long throws and free-kicks lobbed into the Torquay box. Torquay were generally struggling to deal with them and it was a matter of time before Braintree made one count. There was a mixture of lax defending not clearing its lines until a Braintree player headed into an open goal from inside the 6 yard box as goalkeeper Moore stood and appealed for offside. In my book it was poor goalkeeping as Moore should be commanding his own 6 yard box. The game was following an all too familiar script with Torquay failing to get things going. Braintree looked neat and more cohesive.
Then a bizarre incident with 10 minutes left of the first half. Williams got free in the box, seemed to get pulled by a defender but Williams kept his footing and unleashed a lovely low, powerful shot past the keeper. The referee awarded a goal, players were getting ready for the kick-off, there were no protests from Braintree. Then it was noticed the assistant was flagging, the referee had a long consultation and the referee disallowed the goal. It's anyone's guess what that was for. Torquay's players protested and so did the crowd. Thankfully this incident really wound up Torquay who laid into Braintree and got their just desserts a few minutes later from Williams again! Williams who made no mistake again with another low drive into the corner of the net.
Torquay's second half performance was probably the best I've seen them play all season at home. Following a Luke Young free-kick the ball fell to that man Williams again who finished off. Torquay almost made it 3-1 on several occasions including a far post header from Williams against the post from close range. Reid and Lee had chances that their keeper saved well from. Braintree made all 3 substitutions and gave it a go and Moore saved a shot onto the crossbar. These were nervy moments but in added time Lee made the game safe finishing at close range.
There were great scenes at the end between the crowd, the players and Nicholson. It was an impressive win but my joy was dampened somewhat when I heard that Solihull and Woking had both won. At least Torquay did their bit today and we live to fight another day. Oh, and it was nice to experience that winning feeling again.
I was really impressed with our work rate today especially players like Reid and Keating and once we equalised there were some very good performances out there. We looked there for the taking in the first 30 minutes and we missed Lathrope protecting the defence. Reid has done really well in left midfield since he's replaced Sparkes with his running with the ball and tireless running sometimes to chase down lost causes. With Keating's work rate and surprising ability in the air, it paved the way for Williams to do what he does best - finish!

Good crowd, good weather, good result ! An exciting match with plenty of controversy. You'd have plenty of talking points to consult the rule book about, and no more so than Brett Williams disallowed 'goal'. And what a long time after he'd 'scored' it, before the decision was finally taken to wipe it off. I'd even been wondering about the rules before we kicked off as with just the players and officials on the pitch, striding on from the sidelines came Braintree Manager Hakan Hayrettin. Surely he's not allowed to come on to impart last second information I thought, but soon all was revealed as Hayrettin had walked half way across the pitch to join in his team's pre-match huddle ! Then there was Braintree's captain Jack Midson. I know an armband isn't the easiest thing to keep in place with a short sleeved shirt, but Aman Verma manages it. If Midson had an armband with him, it was either tucked in his shorts or down a sock, as I could see no evidence of it whatsoever. Braintree looked smart in their white shirts with day-glo orange shorts and socks. Reminiscent of Blackpool in the days of the Anglo-Italian Tournament, for anyone old enough to remember that always bad tempered affair. Televised by ITV in the Summer, probably in the early !970's (this is only guesswork from hazy memory) and all I can remember is that matches always seemed to involve Blackpool !. Continuing for a moment more to wallow in nostalgia, in the olden days when you spent your hard earned on a match programme, you'd get the name of the Ref, where he was from, and also some info on the linesmen and which colour flag they'd be holding. Damned if I could even find the names of today's officials though I searched the programme from cover to cover, and had paid three quid for the thing. No Big screen as back up, and no Sunday Independent tomorrow either to name and shame the man in black. For instance, only four minutes of additional time were added to the first period, despite lengthy consultations with his linesman re Brett's 'goal', numerous instances of time wasting, and waiting for needle and thread to be produced so that the goal net could be repaired. But anyway, let's have a little info on the officials; OK no need to go back to the days when we all knew that Roger Milford was from Bristol, but is a name really too much to ask? A good atmosphere inside Plainmoor, although you always get one or two idiots shouting out things they shouldn't in the heat of the moment. I include myself in this, and regret pointing and shouting 'Polly Toynbee's Puppy Dog Army' at a group of Guardianista/TUST Militants half a block from me. Much as I enjoyed TQ1 bravely taking them on, on a different Forum last night, perhaps it's better to let sleeping puppy dogs lie. So anyway, Brett Williams thought he'd put us ahead. His goal would have stood back in the days of Roger Milford's officiating, as Roger would have correctly adjudged that Brett had been 'played onside' as the ball came through to him due to the clumsy and ineffectual efforts of two Braintree defenders to clear it; their contact with the ball would have allowed Brett to prosper from his such good fortune. In the fullness of time, I'll probably learn that the rules have changed; that Brett was offside in the first phase of play, but offside in the second...or some equally bamboozling 'amendment' to the rulebook, that leaves spectators wishing it had been left alone, as they at least understood the old system. Brett soon notched a goal that did count, and he clearly enjoyed celebrating in the vicinity of the linesman, who in retaliation was no doubt racking his brains to dream up a reason to chalk that one off as well. H.T Gulls 1 Iron 0 Important corrective edit: H.T Gulls 1 Iron 1 (thanks to Chelston ) £290 on offer for the 50/50. Ticket No.18863 was the one you needed. Chris from Teignmouth didn't have it, but he did have Ticket No.18564 which entitled him to three attempts at the crossbar challenge. I doubt very much that he's reading, but just in case, I'm sure he'd far prefer it that I didn't describe his unsuccessful efforts. Plenty more open attacking play. Plenty more whistling from the over officious Mr.X. Relatively early in the second half and Brett confidently drove home a second to put us in the lead. 'Are you watching Alan Rushbridger' was all I could think of to taunt the nearby clique of Guardianista's....as sadly, it wasn't just today's Ref that I didn't know the name of, but also the current Editor of The Guardian is unknown to me also. Jordan Lee added a third for us a few minutes before full time. Nico celebrated the win, Tim Herbert cheered, the puppy dogs cheered, and the players all had smiles on their faces, as well they should, as they'd had to work hard all match to secure the win. Great Escape II is still possible !

chelstongull You wouldn't think so judging by that elementary inaccuracy would you ? But then, many questioned whether our defence were there either, given the ease with which Braintree scored their goal.

Love those pictures of the Marnham Road sign and the view walking toward the ground, AJ.
I hope a fair few have been persuaded to make Dover a home from home on Saturday and swell the away support. I think it makes a real difference to this Manager and group of players presently to have good and vocal support like today.
