Isn't there a saying that 'Art imitates life', though it could be the other way round, and I don't know what it means anyway. But reading 'Devon Live' today, and seeing mention of Paul Sturrock, I thought 'Sports Journalist' David Byrom's words rather imitated nothing more than a particularly poor and vitriolic Forum post....and I'm not sure it's up to even that standard.
Sturrock not only had a highly impressive International career, appearing at two World Cup finals, but managed at Premier League level with Southampton, as well as clocking up a few promotions with Argyle, including taking them to their highest league position for twenty years, and getting Sheffield Wednesday promoted to the Championship. He's done a great deal for football in the South West for many years, and even now, when nowhere near in the best of health due to Parkinson's Disease, helps out with Plymouth Parkway in the Peninsula League.
Sturrock's wikipedia page states that: 'Even in retirement, Sturrock remains a highly respected character'. And that's what I would have thought too. And if there's any sphere where Sturrock's opinions deserve to be respected more than most, you'd imagine it was on the subject of football. Though clearly not by whipper snapper, still wet behind the ears, Devon Live journalist, David Byrom.....who sees himself as a sufficient authority to put Sturrock in his place.....here's a selection of Byrom's opinions today:
Paul Sturrock - a man not involved in professional football since almost relegating Yeovil Town last season - has made the bizarre claim that Exeter City qualifying for the play-offs shows how weak League Two is this season.
The former Plymouth Argyle boss, currently an adviser at Plymouth Parkway of the Peninsula League Premier Division - a level of football well known for being a hotbed of knowledge on the ins and outs of League Two.
With perennial title challengers Parkway finishing in midtable, maybe Sturrock would be better concentrating on his own level of football in future.

If young Mr.Byrom is an example of the new breed of local journalist we have to look forward to, then long live Dave Thomas.
