Fascinating stuff, and made all the better by a good colour photograph of the occasion. Cyril rightly makes mention of 'a back four like theirs' and Willie Miller and Alex McLeish were instantly recognisable figures to football fans south of the border due to coverage of the Scottish national team, as well as Aberdeen's impressive exploits in European competition. 'We worked very hard across the front line, even when we didn't have the ball' observed Cyril. I wonder if we'll hear the Bromley manager express similar sentiments at any time during the forthcoming season

A terrific photograph with the players all focused on the ball!
This match was the first of a five-match pre-season tour by Aberdeen. The other games were:
26-Jul-87 Dawlish Town AFC Won 4:0 28-Jul-87 Plymouth Argyle AFC Won 4:2 30-Jul-87 Newport County AFC Won 2:1 31-Jul-87 Exeter City AFC Drew 1:1
Aberdeen records say Willie Miller played up front against Plymouth Argyle and scored all four goals. I will need to look at that!

I had forgotton that we had played a home pre season game against Dundee FC on the 28th July 1980 and i think that these are the only two occasions that we have faced Scottish opposition unless anyone knows differently...

Re: CHARLES SMITH - Aberdeen and Torquay Utd.
Hi! I am an Aberdeen fan and football collector, and I just bought a few items about Charles Smith, ex-Torquay and Aberdeen, including a Scottish Football Association transfer form, which certified his transfer from Aberdeen to Torquay on 10th April 1946, and also a letter from the Torquay manager, W. Butler, to Charlie (as he called him) confirming the arrival of the official transfer form and talking about him coming , presumably to play in, the match at Aldershot on Saturday, when he can sign the forms! This would have been on Saturday, 6th April 1946, away at Aldershot at 3 p.m. according to Billy Butler!! Having looked a little on the internet, I can't find out much about Charlie Smith, but I did find this site, and a thread concerning Torquay players with Scottish connections, although it says he was born in Wales. As that thread was from 2014, I spotted this more recent one concerning Aberdeen - I have the said programme amongst my collection, although if anyone had a teamsheet or a ticket..... . So, I though I would get in touch and see if anyone had any more info regarding Charlie Smith. He played for Aberdeen from 1937 - 39 making 21 League appearances and scoring 5 goals as an outside right. During the war, judging by some addresses on enveloped he was a Sgt. PTI in the Army, but he seemed to play for Fulham, York and Derby, as there are also letters from those clubs in the bundle. I have tried to find some info on Torquay's players from then, but to no avail. If anyone had any info for me, I would be very grateful. Regards, Dave davegalloway1964@hotmail.com
PS Although Willie Miller became the "best penalty-box defender in the world" (I think it was Franz Beckenbauer who said that) he did sart of as a striker and scored 20-odd goals for Peterhead (I think) when he was farmed out to them when he first came to Aberdeen in the early 70's, so the odd goal was not unknown, but 4 in one game? No!

.... typical..... I just found out he played for Exeter before the move to Aberdeen and according to their site he played 23 times for Torquay to the end of 46/7, but was then released. How he ended up playing for Aberdeen from the South-West of England is hard to guess!!

How he ended up playing for Aberdeen from the South-West of England is hard to guess!! Aberdeen pinched Yeovil's manager David Halliday straight after Yeovil's FA Cup tie with Manchester United in January 1938. Halliday immediately paid his old club £250 to take Charlie Smith (who had moved from Exeter City to Yeovil at the start of the season) with him to Pittodrie. Smith first played for Torquay United in October 1945 as "guest player" from Aberdeen before signing properly in April 1946. He played 19 wartime games in 1945-46 as well as 23 league games and 1 FA cup game in 1946-47. He played in all five forward positions. He went on to be a PE teacher in Newton Abbot and played for local semi-professional sides Dartmouth United and Newton Spurs.

Jon! Thanks for the info and I understand now, how Charlie Smith ended up in Aberdeen! You say that Charlie first played for Torquay in October - are there records from April 1946, as the letters I have suggest he was going to play in the match v Aldershot on 6th April(away). I'm guessing those would have been friendlies? Or was there an official season that year? Or maybe he just came to watch his new team! Thanks again for filling in the gaps! Dave

I'm guessing those would have been friendlies? Or was there an official season that year? Or maybe he just came to watch his new team! 1945/46 was a "transitional season" as many players had not been demobbed so teams would have struggled to field a full strength team. The first and second divisions were combined and split North / South to provide a 42 game programme. Division 3 South was split North / South into two sections of eleven teams - giving 20 fixtures which were due to be finshed by the end of 1945. Torquay had to re-arrange one game in April 1946. The second part of the season was a cup competition played on a league basis - another 16 fixtures. In both competitions, clubs were free to use "guest players" - players registered at other clubs such as Smith at Aberdeen. United's team was usually a collection of contracted pros, guest players and local amateurs. The only competition recognised as "official first class" was the FA Cup. Clubs were not allowed to use guest players in the FA Cup so had to go to great lengths to scrape together an eleven deprived of guests. Smith was not therefore allowed to play for Torquay in the FA Cup. Here are the games he did play - either as a guest or a contracted pro: League games: 20/10/45 H v Reading W 4 - 3 Court 2, Williams, W Smith 10/11/45 H v Bristol City L 0 - 1 15/12/45 H v Crystal Palace L 1 - 2 Knapman 22/12/45 A v Crystal Palace L 0 - 5 29/12/45 A v Bournemouth W 2 - 0 Dyer, C Smith 27/04/46 H v Brighton & HA D 0 - 0 Cup games: 19/01/46 A v Reading L 0 - 6 26/01/46 H v Bristol Rovers W 1 - 0 Mercer 09/02/46 H v Cardiff City W 1 - 0 Cothliff 16/02/46 A v Cardiff City L 0 - 3 23/02/46 H v Bristol City W 4 - 2 Phillips 2, Kernick 2 02/03/46 A v Bristol City L 1 - 5 Phillips 09/03/46 A v Exeter City D 1 - 1 Phillips 23/03/46 A v Brighton & HA L 0 - 4 30/03/46 H v Brighton & HA W 1 - 0 Brown 06/04/46 A v Aldershot D 1 - 1 Brown 13/04/46 H v Aldershot D 1 - 1 Phillips 19/04/46 A v Bristol Rovers L 1 - 3 C Smith 20/04/46 H v Swindon Town W 4 - 1 Conley 4 The season's league tables are here: www.rsssf.com/tablese/eng46.html
