27 December 1949 saw the highest aggregate attendance for the Football League - 1,272,155. This was at a time when the league had 88 members. This included 12,258 for Torquay United v Bristol City. The smallest crowd was 6,910 for Hartlepools (as it was in those days) v Barrow. We'd played the day before - 26 December - at Bristol City in front of 24,162. This had been the day when the previous aggregate record had been set! Source: Through the Turnstiles by Brian Tabner

Interesting reading Barton and what massive crowds but the one that stands out for me is Hull City's attendance against Brentford which beats a big Yorkshire derby and compares to two big traditional footballing clubs . This from a club and town where Rugby League dominated against a team from way down south!

And the Leeds manager when Torquay beat them in 1955!

I wish the school had not have been built so close, I'd love to have seen 21,000 people at Plainmoor, All I get is my dad's stories.
