Well, the score line says it all, doesn't it? It ended up as a shambles as we allowed Bromley to just waltz through for all their goals. It was a good job Clarke in goal had a decent game as well. He pulled off a few fine saves including a penalty save. Today reminded me of that embarrassing 7-3 home defeat a few seasons ago when Dean Edwards was in charge. That day we made Bromley look like Barcelona and today was similar. At least Deano left after his sole game in charge but today we are still stuck with the hapless Owers in charge. I'm afraid the supporters have lost patience with Owers and chants of "we want Owers out" were heard from the Popside at the final whistle amidst the boos. Crowd 1,547 with 70 from Bromley. No sponsors MOTM was announced which says it all.
Torquay played quite decent in the first half and were the better team for the majority of the half. But, and this sums us up in a nutshell, we only play well BETWEEN the two penalty boxes. There was some very good passing and approach play but did we seriously threaten in the penalty box - no! Our best effort was a long range Young shot that beat their keeper but just swerved at the last moment and clipped the outside of the post. Young put in a great first half shift as did debutant striker Romain. Romain, playing as a lone striker, did a manful job against the Bromley defenders. He's not the biggest of strikers but can put himself around and anticipate. Those around me felt he's the best striker we've had this season. Romain made a couple of half chances for himself and put through Reid in the first half. There seemed to be a good balance and shape to our team in the first half. Then on 41 minutes, a Bromley player handled the ball just inside his own half and the crowd appealed. The referee did not blow up, a Bromley player walzed through our defence, Clarke saved but the ball spilled out and Bromley scored in controversial circumstances. It was tough on Torquay and we trailed 1-0 at half-time. The trouble was again for all our good approach player we rarely troubled their keeper whereas Clarke had to come to our rescue more than once.
The second half was even but yet again I cannot recall Torquay going close? Again we do very little when in the opposition box and we have not got any players to get onto set pieces. It was game over on 65 minutes. When Bromley attacked there was a nice bit of pace and trickery in their team. They made our defence look too static and scored a neat second goal planting the ball on their left past Clarke. Clarke had made a couple of outstanding saves in quick succession, one palming out a shot destined for the top corner and another brilliant save at full stretch from a header from a corner. Torquay made 3 substitutions but they were a well beaten team in the second half. Bromley were having fun at our expense and were too quick for us as goals 3 and 4 went in. O'Sullivan was at fault leading to one of their goals and his replacement, Mitchell, was far too lightweight for their fourth as Bromley left him for dead leading to the goal. At least Clarke saved our blushes and saved a penalty to prevent a fifth. Torquay actually had a shot on target near the end by Gosling but we were a well beaten team by then.
So another new low and it is clear that we cannot defend properly or score. It's a lost cause and Owers is becoming an unpopular figure with the supporters. We are going backwards and recent signings like central defender Balatoni and Mitchell look poor and not up to the job. Is Owers the man for the Conference South next season? I am far from convinced.
