Lots of rain overnight so a heavy pitch in prospect, but clear this morning so I would not expect the game to be in doubt.
The pesssimists say we are down already and the optimists tend to agree with them.
Three points today and the expected developments at Hartlepool might just keep that door just a little ajar.
We certainly need to improve on our disastrous scoring record under Owers. Take out the first half v Maidenhead (when the opposition were still on the bus) and the Leyton Orient game (when the opposition midfield and defence failed to turn up for both halves) and the current team is the most goalshy in the history of the club by a country mile. I am even pining for Dean Mooney, Benny Laryea and Gary Pugh.
That said, the optimist may see a reason for hope in the pairing of Romain and Williams. I do not think they are a "natural pair" as both would thrive more on the kind of "hold-up" centre-forward that we have been looking for since Murphy went back but have failed miserably to find. Let's hope we can get some creativity from midfield, play the ball to feet and that Romain's appetite for hard work will create some gaps for Lazy Williams to drift into. I would be amazed if we did not start with those two up front.
Clarke is injured so Dorel will be in goal and you would expect the back three and wing backs to be as last week. Favourable reports that Barnes may be able to play the combative midfield role that we have so clearly lacked, so he and Young are obvious starters.
That leaves just one place up for grabs and two possible slightly different formation options.
Last week we played Barnes behind two in midfield. If we went with that shape again, you would expect the last place to be between Dowling and Lemonheigh-Evans, with O'Sullivan an outside bet.
The least unsuccessful spell under Owers saw two in midfield with one playing "in the hole" between midfield and attack. This slightly more attacking option might suit a must-win home game against poor opposition. If we go with that, the free role is a perfect fit for Gosling who - apart from Young - is the most skillful and creative player we have. Reid would also be a candidate for the free role as might be some of the three young loanee midfielders. I would certainly go for Barnes and Young as the two "proper midfielders".
