Hope Owers has got some names in mind as sure we will need a strong big centre forward for this league - a player that can give and take as well as bang in a few goals. Thus far none of the other signings fit this category.

On the face of it so far our pre season squad building/prep isn't looking particularly impressive. Our lack of goals, sharpness and threat up top was the main reason for our failures last season with a slight improvement in fortunes when firstly Elliot Romain and a genuine goal scorer Rhys Healey arrived on the scene. Williams worked hard but struggled to hit the net his goals scored were mainly from the penalty spot. There was little goal contribution from any other areas of the pitch. So how has Owers tackled this so far? He has resigned Williams- Im ok with that. Jamie Reid under contract will never score regularly though I believe he has other assets that he should concentrate on improving. He's just re-signed Keating who has in all honesty been a flop in front of goal though I guess he would argue has he been given a proper run in the side ? So we have three wage packets taken up by the most important area of the game, scoring goals, who have all failed to produce in there own way over two seasons who are still being persevered with. Bawling, the unknown a wide man and hasn't scored many goals in his career either.
TUFC career goals all comps stats for all three players. (Wiki etc) Bret Williams 51 games 14 goals. Jamie Reid 73 games 9 goals. Ruairi Keating 24 games 7 goals.
Equates to ONE GOAL EVERY FIVE GAMES with little goal contribution from any other part of the team.
Goals and genuine forward threat always has been and will be key to any success. Thus far I just cannot see any changes from the previous two seasons. Its so much easier defending when your front men have opposing defenders on the back foot and opposition uncertain and reluctant to commit for fear of conceding. We have failed in this key area for season after season. Early days but this last signing of Keating tells me Owers has failed to sign Romain or any decent forward on board and is having just the same problems that Nicholson was faced with and why he signed a very average James Gray in the final days just before the start of season. Hope to be proved wrong as we all do of course and Owers manages to pull a couple of rabbits out of the hat.....but!

I take it we haven't heard whether McGinty, Davis and Dorrell have signed for the forthcoming season yet?

Jason Banton had good spell a few years ago when on loan to Argyle (there's a good You tube of his time there) but since then he seems to have gone downhill with a fair number of derogatory comments on him on Woking and Crawley town forums . Definitely has ability and flair but is bound to be the type that frustrates many just as Toby Ajala did. Time will tell and the proof of the pudding etc etc.
