After Belgium won this afternoon England know a win against this lowly ranked side would see them through to the second round with a game to spare. Lot of debate about Sterling and Rashford but for me I would like to see the substantial involvement of natural goalscorers like Vardy and Rashford as we did muck up some gilt edged chances last time out, almost to our cost.

Think fair to say that the first half went well! Very clinical - probably best I have seen England put them away

What a nasty undisciplined, cheating side Panama are. Total disgrace.

A rare comfortable win - most enjoyable though the second half the players switched off and it all became a bit of a bore. We can still look sloppy and careless at times though and coming games against better opposition will give us a clearer idea of where we really are. Panama were quite rightly punished for their indiscipline and recklessness. Finally a decent ref who saw the wrestling.

Yep, the ref was pretty good. I suppose with 30c heat it is hard to go flat out when you are winning comfortably but Southgate would have liked us to take a better goal difference going into the Belgium game. No matter, we are through with a very rare luxury of a game to spare with the next one up having little riding on it but do you maintain momentum or rest key players like the Belgium manager has hinted?

I think the next match does have a lot riding on it. By that time it should be clear who our potential quarter final opponents are, which side of the draw Germany are on. But with all respect to Tunisia and panama , the match against Belgium will be the first against one of the tournament favourites, then we will see what this England side are really capable of.

I think the officials this WC have in general been very, very poor.
FIFA or whoever needs to be bold in cutting out cheating/poor gamesmanship which in today’s world of 100’s of cameras can’t be that difficult surely.
There’s so much pulling and holding at corners its more like WWE – card them without warning.
In today’s game there was two incidents of elbowing players (one of the Panama players after elbowing went down feigning injury), with VAR, book them.
Not allowing a penalty to be taken without trying to put the player off, book them without warning.
There was an incident today when a Panama player went down (no head injury) as they attacked, no stop in play. As soon as England got the ball, the ref blew up.
Book them early and the fouls will stop.

Not the strongest of opponents but you can only beat what's put in front of you. Hopefully we'll be regularly expressing just such sentiments next season as another little NLS side gets crushed by Gary's yellow dynamos. All those goals will have done wonders for the confidence of the players, as well as making Gareth Southgate's shoulder feel a bit less painful. Now it'll be down to working out whether to keep momentum going by trying to beat Belgium, or to play some more squad players. As we won't meet Belgium again until the final , maybe we shouldn't show our full hand against them on Thursday? Or can we see any likely advantage to topping the group ? Chelston makes some good points about the officiating. In the later match the little Japanese were often painfully on the end of carelessly flailing Senegalese elbows. One problem the Japanese don't have to contend with, is that they're considered much less of a threat from corners, and so don't suffer the pulling and holding that England's players do. With linesmen having been instructed pre-tournament not to flag for marginal offsides, and to leave VAR to decide on such borderline decisions, you do wonder whether the Refs as well are subconsciously leaving responsibility to those watching the screens. Why have all the responsibility for a contentious decision on your shoulders when you can justifiably claim: 'Nothing to do with me Guv, it's what the VAR boys have just told me to give via my earpiece' Putin's World Cup continues to run smoothly, entertainingly, and safely, with our fans seemingly far safer over there in Russia than if they'd stayed at home and took their chances on the acid stained streets of London, where 10,000 knives glint in the Summer sunshine.
