The awards won't be made of gold AJ- they're be made up from the family silver that our Gordon is so keen to flog off.

Across the Forums you'd be hard pressed to find one word of welcome for this. What is important to fans, and which must leave TUST tearing their hair out, are trivialities such as the name for a little prize to be given to a kid in the football development programme. I would have to disagree as I think the name is important as it is a link between the club and the cup name etc. Surely you want someone who has strong links with the club, perhaps an ex-legend (Robin Stubbs, Kevin Hill et al), someone who has given their all (and money) and supported the club (Paul Bristow) or some local dignitary who has championed the club through thick and thin (sorry can't think of anyone).

I see what you mean, Chelston. I think it's because I view the creation of this new trophy as a daft idea, and then deciding to name it after an individual as a daft idea, that I'm giving the whole thing the 'trivial' tag. Just incorporate the club name to start with, e.g 'Torquay United Player Of The Season Award', and the club and the trophy are so unmistakably intertwined, that making a separate link to connect club and trophy is unnecessary.
But if we skip on a few steps, and instead use a starting point of 'we must have this trophy, and it's got to be named after a person', then perhaps the Oliver Award is as suitable as any. If we think about the nature of this new trophy, it's all about paying homage to our bright new prospects, to the building blocks of our future. It's a trophy geared towards, and focused on looking forwards. There is a time and a place for thinking about legends (the other 364 days of the year) and ways of suitably honouring them. Hasn't the club created a Robin Stubbs suite at Plainmoor, as well as making him President of their Official Supporters Club? The reality is that Paul Bristow, Hill, and Stubbs are part of Plainmoor history. The young players in contention for the top player in the Football Development Programme Trophy (aka Oliver Award) will be writing bright new chapters for us at the Osborne Arena. This trophy is all about looking confidently and expectantly to the future, and not casting our minds back decades to past glories.
And if we could view things from the future, would we not look back and conclude that Gordon Oliver was the driving force at local government level, in the brave fight to get modern, fit for purpose facilities for Torquay United, to help speed them on their way back to the football league, a marvellous setting which doubles as an Events Venue, allowing the youth of the Bay to attend a variety of concerts and other enjoyable activities. An award connected with the hoped for achievements and activities of the upcoming generation, to which Mr.Oliver has been prominent in championing the forward thinking required.
Perhaps a TUST financed 'Best Interests Of The Club' trophy, that it's members can dish out to whatever old name is their flavour of the month would be more suitable for the legends?. But just as the batch of young players in the Development Programme can brighten our future, it will be the giant step ('in the not too distant future') that will really put a rocket under TUFC and it's ambitions to power our way back into, and then up through the Football League, leaving the old loss making days of Plainmoor far behind us. And I'm sure you'll be wanting to buy Mr.Oliver far more than just a pint and a pie to express your gratitude for his clear thinking, foresight, and hard work, in helping build that bright future that Torquay United will then be enjoying.

I really don't understand why most of you are so patient with this AJ fellow when he comes out with such absolute nonsense. I can only assume that some of you know him personally and have decided to keep humouring him because he is deluded and harmless. On the other hand, perhaps he enjoys winding up fools like myself who will be inevitably drawn into responding out of sheer desperation after reading his ludicrous essays. I did say, some weeks ago, that I would simply scroll past whatever he says, but I simply can't help myself. I even find myself looking forward to his next set of comments about how socialism is ruining football. Well done, Alpine Joe, you have regained my full attention, but never forget why. I think most of us are baffled as to why he keeps recycling the same old bullshit, but could not be bothered to argue with him. There’s definitely an element of that.

The ridiculous plans are not even pie in the sky but more like dog shit on the pavement. GI have never delivered any successful stadium project and I suspect they never will.

The Devon link mentions and I quote: "GI also operates stadia at Swindon, Poole and Reading"Reading is rubble since 2008 after Osborne promises and a disappearing act. Are they just his mouthpiece now. They haven’t been involved at MK Bowl for years either. Ends one way when he ‘plans’ a stadium. As everyone, including our resident ‘bullshitter’, knows. Guy Henderson and Dave Thomas will be complicit in our death. A death suffered in Reading already. Shame on them.

Maybe it does, but there are still plenty unlike yourself who choose not to accept our ‘death is already occurring’ and will continue to support our NLS side.

The HE sports writers really need to build in some robust investigative journalism to augment their reports so as to show they have researched their articles. At the moment their writings feel lazy and appear to be lacking in substance.

Kevin Foster take - provides a bit of balance after an one sided piece for the club’s owner with a few incorrect statements along the way. I wonder what the enabling development is? ( aka getting a load of free land with permission to build on and make a shedload of cash!) - link
