Johnson pre match interview So after the disappointment of going out in the FA Cup last weekend it is back to league action where we are looking to continue our decent form which has seen us get to within two points of the top of the division. This is also our only home game in the middle of a run of five which we need to take full advantage of. In fact, with all the rain we have had recently, those run of away games are not actually a bad thing when it comes to the state of the pitch. The weather is forecast to be dry both for today and match day tomorrow which should keep the surface in good nick. So we have a new signing at left back who is supposed to be very similar to Liam Davis which is a pretty good accolade and I’m looking forward to seeing him on his debut for the club and looks like he will be with us for a good couple of months. That sorts the defence out, with the only question being who will play in goal, it is McDonald’s turn but who knows? The strike force goes without saying and in midfield although Andrews is close to coming back, I get the sense that tomorrow is too soon but you never know with Johnson. If not fit then Kalala and Keating who made an appearance last weekend will be vying to start alongside Buse, Vincent and Whitfield. Funny how Keating’s stock has fallen this season and Kalala needs to find more consistently because on his day he can be unplayable. Sutton have got some good players but are not scoring many and consequently not winning much either with only Chorley below them. However, we don’t want to see them scoring first as we could see another Maidstone situation with 10 men behind the ball. Looking forward to this one - COYY!

rjdgull A game in which we'll hope to keep the League momentum going by adding another 3 points. rjd's comment got me thinking back to my 1st July post on how I viewed things as we were thinking ahead to this new season: 'Looking at rjd's provisional starting eleven, the three whose places might be most under threat in my opinion are MacDonald, Niate and Keating .......... Keating, noticeably below the standard required for a striking role at National League level previously, is probably best advised concentrating on the wider attacking midfield position he performed well in last season. Will he be up to National League standard this time around ?' Based on NSL performances I thought it was possible to identify those who would struggle to get regular starts at a tier higher, but with Ruari we'd seen a fair bit of him at this level previously on which to make an assessment. By the number of midfielders brought in during pre-season, I feel Ruari's stock was already valued at a level signifying his first team opportunities were expected to be very limited. The 'Ruari as striker' option had also probably been binned for good some time ago, and if Manny Duku isn't up to it, then I think it would always be the loan market or a new signing before hoping against hope that Ruari could be a central striker in this league. But it's a long season, and as we're all too aware, we do experience injuries, so if MacDonald, Niate, and Keating conscientiously keep themselves fit and ready, then there's always the possibility of us needing to press them into service, even if it's only short term. But as for this Saturday, the player I really wish well is 'Terry' Medford-Smith, who has particularly big boots to fill. Our attacking play is aided to such a great extent by Liam Davis' talent down the left, that it's asking a lot for any replacement to fill that gap anywhere near as well. Davis had the ability, experience and knowledge of this team to be a key cog in our success. No one should expect 'Terry' to step in and immediately reach those standards. A different player, and with some different strengths and weaknesses for sure. Let's give him a reasonable time to settle in and be fair in our expectations. Guest starring Gary Johnson as 'Sir Dennis'

A pleasant November day for a change and back to league business. Bright sunshine to cheer and surely a foregone conclusion of a result with such a gap between ourselves and Sutton Utd and such contrasting recent form. I doubt that very much . We face yet another struggling side desperate to pull away from the relegation zone. Wrexham proved difficult to break down and were unlucky not to at least gain a point just a few weeks ago and have followed up with some better results.
Oddly we have performed better against the better sides. I hope we have the right mind set today. If we do then we should win comfortably but if we turn up as we did at Maidstone then it could be a very difficult afternoon and I consider the loss of Liam Davis a major blow his are hard boots to fill.

Dreadful game of football to watch and another injury to a creative midfielder. Today was the day the injury situation finally caught up with us. You can only paper over the cracks for so long before it all catches up and today was that day. Once Vincent went off we lost all cohesion and shape in the middle of the park with KK coming on and trying his best to play the part to no avail. Hes a wide man in essence but was the nearest thing we had on the bench as a replacement for a creative midfielder. Matt Buse was left with too much to do and was having a poor game in any case by his recent high standards and despite our lively start we were far to careless with the ball defensively and looked vulnerable and eventually paid the price against a pretty average Sutton Utd side. When you look at our injured list its mainly influential midfielders, players that can really affect and win a game in an instant so its hardly surprising how we seemed to lose all cohesion and looked more and more desperate as the game wore on. Sutton were of course happy with their result and display but wouldn't have stood an earthly if we had had our full contingent of midfielders to choose from. Didnt think the three at the back worked at all - I guess it was to get the wing backs further up the pitch. Ben Wynter fulfilled his side of the bargain, Medford -Smith did what he could but compared to Liam Davis theres no contest. Liam was a big miss as had predicted and will continue to be, we had virtually nothing happening on he left flank going forward. Reid was living off of scraps and Saikou is yet hit anywhere near the form he showed last season and was very disappointing today. Hope we don't go on a loseing run now I fear we may with such a weakened midfield with little prospect of early returns of so many influential players. If were not careful our season could easily implode No idea what GJ can do to resolve the urgent situation but if anyone can find an answer he can.

A bad day at the office with a second poor performance and defeat in a row against a lowly team and two more key players today went off today with bad looking injuries. Torquay bossed the first 10 minutes, played some great pass and move slick football and should have taken the lead but for some desperate last ditch defending. However, all game Torquay were sloppy in their own half often giving the ball way in dangerous areas. The warning signs were there before Sutton took the lead when Vincent carelessly gave the ball away that put Sutton through. A few minutes later out of nothing and more sloppy defending Sutton found themselves 1-on-1 with Covolan and took the lead totally against the run of play. Crowd a decent 2,770 with 92 vocal supporters from Sutton and sponsors MOTM deservedly going to Torquay's goal scorer right back Wynter.
My first observation today was how good the pitch looked with all the recent rainfall. Some muddy patches in the goalmouths but apart from that the pitch looked in pristine condition. There was no rain or wind today unlike recent home games so it was perfect conditions for football. Torquay attacked the Family stand end in the first half. Buse got on the end of a slick passing move that was cleared in the goalmouth by a defender. Sutton at this stage looked poor and there for the taking against a rampant looking Torquay. But that early momentum was undone when Sutton took the lead. Torquay then lost their way for 20 odd minutes and Sutton got their act together. Torquay's uncertain defending continued with players like Vincent, Buse and Niate giving away possession cheaply. Niate was recalled in defence and Torquay played with 3 at the back. Cundy had a decent game and Cameron was ok but Niate often was out-of-sorts. Ironically, like when Sutton scored, Torquay scored out-of-the-blue when Sutton were on top. Reid, who did not appear for the pre-match warm up as he was carrying an injury, put through Wynter with a slide rule pass on our right. Wynter picked his spot and beat their keeper with a low shot at the far post. Torquay did improve a bit after the equalizer but it was quite sporadic. 1-1 was probably a fair score at half time. There was the odd good move but also errors like Niate near half-time totally missing a routine header in his box that let in Sutton. Luckily we scrambled the ball to safety. Torquay's best performers were Wynter, Cundy with his clearances and Whitfield for his energy and skill on the ball. Kalala replaced the injured Vincent and took a central role.
It was a poor second half performance. The game got bogged down into a scrappy affair with neither side taking charge. Torquay's potential match winners like Kalala and Janneh both had shocking games, Reid was quiet but can be excused as he was carrying an injury and assisted with Torquay's goal. Disaster struck when Sutton got through our defence rather too easily again and slotted the ball past Covolan. Supporters around me thought Cameron was fouled in the build up but the referee did not spot it. Nevertheless it was another example of slack defending by Torquay. Torquay huffed and puffed, earned a few corners and one or two dangerous free-kicks but there was no proper rhythm in their game. Covolan made a decent tip over save and a couple other decent saves in the second half. In truth, we did not test their keeper enough. Substitute Duku, who replaced defender Niate near the end, had our best chance but his shot was saved by their keeper's legs. Our play got more and more desperate and there was a lack of quality and leadership in our play. It was too mistake ridden with passes going astray and players not on the same wavelength. Near the end Whitfield went off injured and like Vincent's earlier injury I don't think we will see him for a while.
So bad news all around today in a game where Torquay started so promisingly. Sutton dug in and won the game and Torquay were their own worst enemies with too many careless errors in their own half and losing their slick passing game when chasing the game. Our injury list now looks horrendous so let's hope we get one or two back soon otherwise we will struggle in the coming weeks

It was a day where our injuries finally caught up with us with Andrews not making it into the team and further compounded with Vincent taken a knock early on and we played with just one recognised central midfielder for the majority of the match.
We actually started the better team knocking the ball around well with Niate having the best chance early on shooting deep in the penalty area but unfortunately too close to their keeper who was able to smartly get down and make the save.
The goal came out of nothing really with the ball cheaply given away in our half and their attacker managed to get through at least two of our defenders whose tackles just made the ball ricochet back into the path of their striker and was able to get clear and fire home his shot on the edge of the area under Covolan who probably could have done better.
Unfortunately that knocked the stuffing out of us for a bit and Sutton started to enjoy their football and we found it difficult to get back into the game. Obviously a new formation that didn’t quite work, party because Ramarni was understandably a bit tentative early on getting forward as a wing back and party because we missed those passes from Vincent and it was just not happening for us.
The goal came from a quick counter with the ball being held up by Reid who initially missed Wynter free on the right but finally turned around and played a lovely ball into the area for him to pass the ball into the far corner of the net. He almost got another a couple of minutes later when the ball came to him but his 30 yard well struck shot was just wide of the left hand post,
The second half was a scrappy affair where are our performance levels were still well down. After about 20 minutes Suttonscored from nothing really but Cundy was pushed from behind which meant he missed the ball and their striker was able to latch on it and slot home past an onrushing Covolan and a covering defender. I am not sure if we were slow to react because we thought the ref was going to blow up. I am surprised that’ not more was made of it by the Torquay players. At the time. Johnson did comment on this in his post match interview above.
We did have chances to equalise with a free kick controversially given right on the edge of the penalty area when many thought it was just inside with the ref perhaps taking the easy option. There was also another shot right at the beginning of injury time from within the penalty area which also agonisingly just went wide of the right-hand post. Covolan did make a good save from a close range header that was just going under the crossbar when he managed to tip it over but a frustrating day all round as we are a better side than this.
IIt was rather worrying when Whitfield also limped off at the end but the initial prognosis is that both he and Vincent were kicked and hopefully it is nothing more than bruising that will see them ready to go next Saturday as we have no mid week game to worry about.

Eleven players out on the pitch today looked like they had never met each other before.
A disjointed performance - far from an efficient team, more a bunch of perfect strangers.
Andrews was an injury too far, Davis two too far, Vincent three too far. Whitfield four too far?
Ryan Dickson picked up man of the match for Truro, but I don't think we can recall him within 28 days, can we?
The change in formation did not help, but I can understand why Johnson thought it worth a go.
4-2-4 with Whitfield and Kalala wide had been too flimsy at Maidstone. Given the players available, Johnson took the only real option left to him to "stiffen up" the team.
We needed someone to take control at the back and for the two wing backs to push right up. That would give us Whitfield as an extra forward. Simples.
It was really noticeable that we lacked a leader. Back threes brought great success under Cyril and under Kevin Hodges when we had sergeant-majors Impey and Watson calling the shots from the centre of the back three.
None of our back three were up to the job. If we had a Hall or a Dickson calling the shots from just in front, they might have got away with it but.....
Buse has done incredibly well, but you can expect too much of a lad fresh out of the Southern League.
Our luck with centre midfielders is beyond unbelievable. When Vincent went off, we had nobody left to replace him. Whitfield did his best as he always does. That's five different positions he has filled manfully, but he was clearly a square peg in a round hole. Kalvin took Whitfield's place "in the hole". He would have been comfortable there IF we were winning the midfield - but we weren't.
Our best period was when Wynter was getting forward on the right. A sublime pass from Reidy for the goal after it looked like he hesitated too long. Wynter nearly had a second soon after.
On the other flank, Medford-Smith had a disappointing debut. He got forward far less as a wing-back then Davis does as an orthodox full-back. As Rob hints, he was probably more worried about getting caught out of position and getting blamed for leaking a goal than he was about pushing forward and creating. All the hype about a "straight replacement" sounded great, but he looked like a boy filling a man's shoes. A shame for him that he came into such a jittery and unsure formation, rather than slotting in to the confident shape we had a few weeks ago.
I expected us to replace Niate with Keating and go 4-4-2 with Keating and Kalala wide. Instead we went to a sort of 4-3-3 with Duku and Janneh either side of Reid (neither looking comfortable in their positions) and Whitfield and Kalala either side of Buse holding. Nobody really looked like they knew what they were doing.
Finally, Whitfield hobbled off and even now Keating did not get a runout with Koszela filling the attacking midfield (inside right) role for the last few minutes.
A bad performance and a bad result. Let's hope all of Andrews, Vincent and Whitfield are fit for next Saturday. God help us if they are all out!

Most fans fear playing the top four...our fans fear playing the bottom four. Don't expect any decent results until the second week of December. My fault, I've been a bit disorganised this season!

That was the worst performance i have seen for a while and the whole injury situation is getting very frustrating. The only positive was Wynter not getting booked. Almost halfway through the season and this league looks utterly there for the taking. I am not convinced by any team from this division i have seen either on tele or live and that includes us ! Anyway a trip up north to play the bottom club next week and a win could take us to the top of the league. As Reg would say....what could possibly go wrong ?

Very disappointing, particularly as we'd got ourselves into a League position that indicated we have a good chance. And as many have alluded to, no obvious outstanding teams threatening to run away with things this season. Frustrating and annoying that we're in a position where even naming 11 fit players is a struggle, and that's allowing for Jamie Reid's bunions. But still, those players who are available will do all the better with our support, particularly those who are still 'bedding' in ....and trying their best to improve.
