Bobby Knox at no. 9 for Barrow. The ultimate play-anywhere supersub, he goes down in history as both the first sub to score in a league game and the first sub to save a penalty in a league game. supersubdesigns.wordpress.com/2012/08/14/bobby-knox-1965/I remember thinking Barrow were doomed when they had to play him in goal in two league games in 1972. I did not know at the time he had played a full third division game in goal at Plymouth three years earlier. Nor had I heard of John Casley. I did know Webby had played a full match in goal for Chelsea. Two goals for the Fizz Kid - and he would score in the next two matches, but no more league goals after that. He did score lots of runs for Leicestershire though. Interesting to see Nunez with three appearances and one goal in the Western League. We had seen a Frenchman in 1906, a Malteser in 1910 and a "Jugoslav" in 1949, but I think this was our first Spaniard. Fernando Nunez, aged 18 and the son of a waiter, was on trial but not kept on. He goes down as the last player ever to score in the old "public trial games". The new fangled pre-season friendlies started in 1964, but we squeezed in a Whites v Gold and Blues in between games with Argyle and Bristol City. Nunez confidently slotted home a penalty to make it 3-2 to the Gold and Blues. He scored another two in the reserves' pre-season friendly 4-2 win at Ashton Gate. His Western League goal was another winner in a 3-2 Plainmoor win over Barnstaple.

The Herald Express had made a great play of the Spanish triallist story and I am sure it added quite a few to the gate. He did look quite a tidy player. Robin Stubbs dislocated his shoulder during the game and his arm was hanging down with shoulder sloping causing great concern. On came Harry Topping who put it back into place on the pitch. Much relief all round and clearly shown on Robin's face....
