Mike Hughes released so we can bring in Lew Chatterley. That shows how far and how fast we had fallen in three years. Hughes was player-manager at Yeovil for three years, winning the Southern League title in 1971. In 1972 he left the top job at possibly the country's biggest non-league club to come to Torquay as third-in-command behind Jack Edwards and Fred Ford. Ford was axed as an economy measure before Edwards lost his job and was replaced by Musgrove early in 1973. Don Mills went as another economy measure leaving just Musgrove and Hughes as a coaching team. Now Musgrove, desperate to bring in an experienced midfielder, had to let Hughes go to be replaced by someone who could play as well as coach.
