This was a fantastic performance against an extremely good Chester side as the "new spine" of Kruse, Chatterley and Brown proved its worth.
Earlier that season Chester had thumped the mighty Leeds 3-0 on their way to a league Cup semi. They also beat Newcastle before going out 5-4 on aggregate to Villa.
Don't go thinking it was an under-strength Leeds team - they fielded a team full of internationals:
David Harvey Paul Reaney Terry Cooper Billy Bremner Gordon McQueen Trevor Cherry Peter Lorimer Allan Clarke Joe Jordan Terry Yorath Paul Madeley
By my 11-year-old's logic, that meant Torquay could beat Leeds 6-0 and we ended the season as European Cup winners, beating Bayern Munich 6-2 despite some dodgy refereeing in favour of the Germans.
Chester achieved the strange feat of finishing their season outside the promotion places, but finishing the season inside the promotion places.
After winning their last game on April 26, they sat in fifth place on goal average behind Lincoln who had a game still to play.
The following Monday, Lincoln lost 3-2 at Southport - dropping their goal average from 1.71 to 1.65 against Chester's 1.68.
