My thoughts at that match was that Alex Williams (if I remember the name correctly) must be the best goalkeeper in England. And yet as far as I know he never played at full international level despite winning the UEFA U-21 championship in 1984.

And yet as far as I know he never played at full international level despite winning the UEFA U-21 championship in 1984. Williams never actually played for England under 21s - although he was a squad member behind Gary Bailey and Peter Hucker in the pecking order. Took over from Joe Corrigan as City keeper and clocked up 112 consecutive appearances before being kept out by a toe injury in September 1985 and never played for City gain. The toe injury was followed by a back injury which ended his career after a year at Port Vale.
