link - a good summary of where clubs are at the moment on whether and how to continue the season. Seems to be more impetus in the National League to continue but less so at step 2, chance that the South would vote to continue with the North to curtail, would that mean one relegation place in our division?

Seems to be more impetus in the National League to continue but less so at step 2, chance that the South would vote to continue with the North to curtail, would that mean one relegation place in our division? The growth of the pyramid has been a good thing with the South Devon League now connected to the Premier League. But it does give the problem of where you "draw the line". In the good old days there was a definite hard line between league and "non-league" with us and Yeovil for example locked either side of the line for sixty years. The National League tripled in size in 2004, but in doing so may have dragged itself further away from the Football League above. In terms of both football and facilities, what we have seen with Torquay suggests that the gulf between National League and National League South is bigger than that between League 2 and the National League top flight. There is a logic to saying elite football is full-time professional, with part-time not elite. There are part-time teams in our division and full-time teams in the league below, but broadly the line seems to run between the two levels of the National League. I would expect most of our division to want to carry on. I would not be at all surprised if more than half of the teams in the level below do not want to. But you cannot force teams to carry on and it is not fair to the bigger clubs in the level below to end their season. Imagine how York City feel. That could have been us. In addition, our division is a team short this season so needs at least one team to come up from below. I would say our level continues. If one or two (Dover? King's Lynn?) don't want to, they can stop now and take relegation. Wipe their games from the table and complete the season. If two did drop out, you would only need to relegate one more. At the second level, wipe the tables out but have fresh promotion play-off leagues starting ASAP for those who want to compete. If say ten teams in North and ten in South fancy it, have an 18 game season - two up from each. You'd have to adjust the format depending on number of teams and possibly adjust or remove the North / South divide. No relegation for those who opt out.

link - worth listening to Ollie Baylis talking about this issue on radio 5. Impact of relegation and promotion on the season if it continues will be significant. I thought the proposals were just out today but looks like vote as well but not sure when due back by.

Apparently 28 days to respond but responses will be back a lot quicker although I have seen there is a second meeting with Sport England tomorrow so maybe after this.

Same thing is happening in Rugby Union outside of the Premiership. The Championship season 2020/2021 has not yet started and is planned to start on 6 March with the 12 teams split into two 6 team pools and then the best in each pool playing off for the one promotion place to the Premiership. The government winter sports assistance package though as with football has been offered as loans instead of the anticipated grants and several clubs are saying they cannot afford to play. A main interest is Saracens relegated from the Premiership last season because of persistent breaches of the salary cap as they would have expected to bounce straight back with several England internationals at the club. 🏉

I like Jon’s idea, although have no faith in them organising something as sensible as that. My money is on them ditching NLS and NLN and continuing NL.

Should have the vast majority of clubs beyond the half way point by 28 days. Although I suspect most can make up their minds much quicker.

Will be surprised if resolution 1 is not passed, suspect the resolutions are passed once the required majority is reached which should be fairly soon, (end of this week?) as not in anyone’s interest to leave this “hanging.”

Just a few thoughts on recent events. If the NLS / NLN vote to end the season as expected it would surely mean no relegation from the NL. Those struggling at the bottom should therefore not feel threatened and may vote to continue. I maybe clutching at straws here but see it would create many more problems if the season is voided and the government would have to pay furlough costs amounting to more than grants.. It would be an absolute disaster for us plus there is so much more at stake for NL clubs chasing promotion to the football league. All the clubs hard work and investment wasted with no guarantee we could reproduce the form and results next season.
Additionally I see another option to all clubs play on for a few more weeks until we reach a point of the season when PPG can be applied. Surely that would be more in the spirit of the game and sport in general. To my mind that would be a fair outcome and as always I would also argue that football at all levels gives people a something to look forward to and does much to aid the psychological well being of fans around the country.
Voiding the season would have a demoralizing and wholly negative on our already dismal lives.

If your a small club owner losing £80k per month then why not let the government pick up the bill or the majority of it by ending the season now.

Most of the steps 2 clubs that want to void the season are voting to pass resolution one whereby each step determine their own future. If paradoxically the step two clubs that do want to continue the season vote the other way then you’re going to have a roughly 6 to 2 split of their votes. With Wrexham abstaining, that would leave 17 or 18 out of the 22 National League sides to vote this motion through by 75%.or more. While those clubs that would want to end the season would logically vote against it, this is further complicated by if their reasoning is to avoid relegation then voting for step 2 to determine their own future would more likely see no relegation from the National League. So it all becomes tactical but with the FA still to approve any motion, they may find it difficult to shut down any league where a straight majority want to continue.
I still think it is more likely for the National League to continue and the North and South not to but no one knows for sure....

If it goes to resolution 4 I can see two scenarios that will cause a shit storm.
1) What happens if the vote is split 15/15?
2) If resolution 4 fails (meaning the season continues in both steps) that surely means the majority of step 2 sides are going to have consider defying the National League. Expulsion surely wouldn't an option because with suspension of steps 3 and below there is nowhere for them to go.
I think it is going to come down to the Football Association to decide this.
