I’d forgotten about this game. Considering the gate, the transfer fee would have been fairly low I guess. Can’t imagine a club at that level now travelling to play a game of this nature for such a paltry return. I’d also forgotten that John Bond had managed Burnley and along with John Benson and a few players, there is a strong feeling of Manchester City about them. The match ball donor was my old PE teacher, Jim Grey (quite a scary man when you’re 12) from Audley Park.

Makes you wonder how a Burnley squad with so much ability ended up in Div 4 when we played them regularly during the 1980's.
Can't remember this game, was it a friendly or testimonial?

Burnley did not travel down just for this game. They played Argyle in a third division game the Saturday before at Home Park. Bondy wanted them to tie that game in to a mid-season break on the English Riviera so got Torquay United to pay for three nights hotel accommodation for them in return for Wharton's signature - which as we have seen was not forthcoming anyway. I expect Torquay put them up at one of John Perry's hotels (Livermead Cliff or House) for next to nothing, using the gate money to offset the match and extra hotel costs.

Clue is in the title: Andy Wharton Transfer Fee MatchAndy Wharton - cant remember a single game he played but this is on or around the Dave Webb era though doesn't look a bad side. I more than likely had given the club a break and as we continued to spiral down hill..

The match ball donor was my old PE teacher, Jim Grey (quite a scary man when you’re 12) from Audley Park. You've dredged up two old memories of mine with that post. The first is of a cross country run at Audley Park; I was trailing very badly in last place when Mr Grey yelled at me to get a move on. I silently muttered "F### you" to myself. Turned out that old Grey was pretty good at lip reading from a distance of 50 yards. The second was one day in 1979 when I learnt from reading the Daily Mirror that Steve Daley had become Britain's second £1 million footballer upon signing for City from Wolves. My immediate thought was "there must be two Steve Daleys". Alas for City there wasn't. It does seem odd though that Bond, who was responsible for getting rid of Daley at Maine Road should sign for what was to be a single season at Turf Moor for both of them.
