I found the following post on Facebook Football Nostalgia page and funnily enough, it was something I had thought about recently. The example below is for Chelsea and when I get time I will look to see if I can come up with something for Torquay but I don’t really have my books etc at hand but I’m sure Jon does. Anyway, seemed an interesting idea.
Club Football Trees
Start with your club's most recent match.
Find a player that played with a player but as long ago as you can.
Then look at that player and find another player that played with him and once again go back as far as you can. Continue.l
(Only works if your club have a continuous streak going back to the first ever game and didn't renew all your players over one or both of the wars.)
The aim is to get it down to the fewest number of players.
This is the best I can come up with at Chelsea.
The brackets indicate the year of their debut.
Marcos Alonso
Played with John Terry (1998)
John Terry
Played with Dennis Wise (1990)
Dennis Wise
Played with John Bumstead (1978)
John Bumstead
Played with Peter Bonetti (1959)
Peter Bonetti
Played with Frank Blunstone (1953)
Frank Blunstone
Played with John Harris (1946)
John Harris
Played with Dicky Spence (1934)
Dicky Spence
Played with Harold Miller (1923)
Harold Miller
Played with Harry Ford (1912)
Harry Ford
Played with Ronald Brebner (1906)
Ronald Brebner
Played with Thomas Miller (Club's First Game 1905)
So those 11 players are the history of Chelsea.
They have each played at least one game in the same team as the player paired with them. They are the Trigger's Broom of Chelsea.
Quite amazing this could be done in just 11 players over 116 years.
What can you come up with at your club?
