I do remember this game. Our goals came within a minute or so of each other, with Eddie Kelly seemingly waltzing through half the Yeovil team from kick-off following Benny Laryea’s goal. There clearly was a bit of a gap between league and non-league then, even for a side as awful as ours back then. Yet three members of that side listed in the programme would feature in Cyril’s team in 1988, and two others Hall and Anderson would go onto better things than we were at that time. Plus Kelly and Currie had seen better days, better than the two South Devon League players in the side would see anyway.
Yeovil featured Paul Thorpe and Colin Barnes who were ex-Torquay. Thorpe hardly (or didn’t) feature. Barnes seemed to have something about him when he joined us from Barnet but it never quite worked out.

Yes you are right hector there was a noticeable gap back then between the Football League and non league, and that was starkly illustrated when promotion and relegation was introduced between the two a couple of years later and for the first few seasons the relegated club bounced straight back.
I suppose a bit like the English Rugby Union Premiership / Championship is now. Although many of us would like to see Ealing promoted this year as sure as eggs are eggs it will be Saracens.
Different days now in football. The National League Premier is a decent standard. It is just a pity that the National League Board do not seem to be able to maintain the professional standards of most of the clubs. ⚽️🏉⚽️

Thorpe hardly (or didn’t) feature. Barnes seemed to have something about him when he joined us from Barnet but it never quite worked out. Worth remembering that Yeovil were not just any old Conference team, they were the worst team in the Conference by a country mile - ending the season eight points adrift at the bottom. Their miserable 25 points from 42 games made our 41 points from 46 games in the league above look like a decent effort. We would not have had such an easy ride had we played a mid-table Conference team. But yes, the gap between the two leagues has narrowed considerably since automatic promotion / relegation came in. We paid a fee, and fought a legal battle, to get Barnes from Barnet but recouped some of it by selling him to Yeovil. Thorpe did not make a competitive first team appearance for Torquay and only stayed for half of his three month contract. Played loads for Yeovil and appeared as co-commentator on the stream for our recent game there. Nigel Jarvis went the other way. Released by the worst team in the Conference, he ended up with the worst team in the Football League.
