Result: 1-2 Dobson(P) Attendance: 4989 When I arrived for this match a lot of people were wearing T-Shirts with `We are going up`written on them. I thought, hope that's not tempting fate. Who's hair brained idea was that? Yes my thoughts exactly Timbo when I arrived after a long trek from North Devon where I was living at the time. We needed just one point from our final game at home and failed dismally! It is a pity we didn't play as well as we did the following week when Scunthorpe were again the visitors for the first leg of the play off semi-final. Mind you Kenny Allen did make sure that the 2nd leg would be interesting and tense! The play-off final was such a disappointment after the season we had had. Swansea had finished miles behind us in the table, but won promotion after a 2-1 win at Vetch Field and then clinging on to a 3-3 draw at Plainmoor. It was the last season of a two leg play off final before it moved as a one off game at Wembley, which may have been a blessing as the disappointment on the drive home was over a lot quicker from Plainmoor than it would have been from Wembley! A good friend of mine scored for Swansea in both legs. The sod!  |

The first and so far only time to date that I felt clinically depressed after a game. Having missed out on the sixties this was the first time that we had a realistic chance of promotion and I thought we had blown it once and for all. What I didn't realise was that this was the beginning of a roller coaster.
