Unreal to think we played them in a friendly at the start of the season in which Red Star Belgrade ended it as champions of Europe with the wonderful Robert Prosinecki playing for them. Would never happen now of course.

Would never happen now of course. Absolutely! I've tried to track down the actual team that played that game with no luck (it's probably somewhere on this site!) but of the line-up on the programme team-sheet eight of them started the European Cup Final against Marseille; : 1. Stevan Stojanović, (2) 3. Slobodan Marović, 4. Refik Šabanadžović, 5. Miodrag Belodedici, 6. Ilija Najdoski, 7. (Vlada Stosic) 8. Robert Prosinečki, 9. Darko Pančev, 10. Dejan Savićević (11) with 7. Vlada Stosic coming on a sub. 11. Mitar Mrkela was transferred to Twente Enschede at some point during that season, but 2. Goran Juric was still in the squad (as far as my research tells me). Simply incomprehensible that they should be playing little 'ole Torquay as preparation for that season. They also played Hinckley Town and Merthyr Tydfil on that tour. A few more details here (but not that many): www.futbolgrad.com/crvena-zvezda-belgrade-england/

We also played Pumas of Mexico around that time I think. I guess Pre-season would often bring big clubs down up to the end of the 90s at least. I remember us playing Chelsea (at least twice, once not even at Plainmoor but at Dawlish), West Ham (where Gittens got into trouble) and Middlesbrough. It seemed to be that we would play “bigger” teams at home whilst going away to the little local teams.
In recent years, other than Plymouth, all we seem to play are teams of inferior standing, and quite often now we are playing these teams at home. I realise this Pre-season was different because our league was behind the others was the same last season as well.
