I can confirm that the Clubcall number no longer works.
What a stunning rip-off that was. Up to 44p a minute and 30 years ago!!

Referee Keith Cooper "is married with 2 children".
One of which will grow up to be a respected coach and relatively successful manager of Swansea City until he resigned this past July.

Yes it was a rip off, especially as you had to listen to up to 2 minutes of "what's coming next" blather before you got any useful news. I do recall sitting on the stairs (phones didn't move in those days, kids) on what must have been 19th April 1989 waiting for the marketing hype to finish before I could learn if we had beaten Wolves away in the Sherpa Vans Trophy semi final. I'm not sure if or why ClubCall was the only way I could discover the score, but however much that call cost me was value for money once I realised we were in the Final. Happy (and expensive) days...

I quite often used to ring up the opposition club if I needed to find out the score and when I was living in London in the early 90s, it would often be a case of having to wait for the next morning’s paper. I used to cycle past WH Smith’s Putney on my way to uni and that would be where I’d stop, almost nervous before heading to the newspaper rack to see what the score was the night before.

Surely you had access to a ceefax enabled telly, much cheaper than pouring money into the opposition's coffers. I will always remember the football homepage number because it has been mine payroll number at work for the past 32 years.

I had a crappy portable TV that wasn’t sophisticated enough for Ceefax in 1991.
