We discussed Jack Leslie before:

100 years ago he made an unexpected first appearance at Plainmoor.
The newly formed United had arranged home and away friendlies with Argyle reserves, but Argyle's first team was scheduled to visit Plainmoor on the last Wednesday in September - as can be seen from the fixture list in Argyle's handbook:

The fixture was much anticipated as both clubs made good starts to the season.
Going in to the last week of September, Argyle had four wins and two draws to be just behind the Division 3 leaders with a chance to go top with a win at Luton. United had a win and a draw in two Western League games and had knocked Minehead out of the FA Cup.
Argyle missed the chance to visit Plainmoor as league leaders by losing 1-0 at Luton. Meanwhile, a disappointing display at Plainmoor put the Argyle fixture at risk. United were hot favourites to beat Frome in the FA Cup, but a bright start did not bring a breakthrough and when Frome scored against the run of play, United lost their way. Reg Stuckey eventually equalised and finally United won a penalty that should have seen them though. Unfortunately, Dapper Frayn missed the penalty - a costly miss.
So now United faced a midweek trip to Frome for a Cup replay. The replay was arranged for the Thursday, but it meant United could not risk the first team against Argyle. Only keeper Bernard Gartrell and left half Percy Hilton played in both games. The rest of the team for the friendly was filled by reserves - although these included Argyle legend Fred Burch and player-coach Fred Mortimer who had both lost their first team places.
United reserves v Argyle's first team would have been a terrible mismatch, so Argyle sent the reserves including young Jack Leslie on the left wing. Leslie scored Argyle's third as they raced to a 4-0 half-time lead. Fred Burch pulled one back against his old club and the game ended 5-1 to Argyle in front of a crowd of around 2,000. How many spectators would a game between the two first teams have drawn?
Sending the reserves suited Argyle as they had gone on from Luton to Barking to play a Monday night friendly with Barking as part of the transfer fee for Leslie and two other players. They were probably relieved not to have to play three first team games in five days.
Leslie made his first team debut for Argyle at Barking - as all three ex-Barking men took part. He was back in his usual place in the reserves at Plainmoor. He very probably would not have played at Plainmoor that night had it not been for Dapper's penalty miss.
