I wouldn’t go quite as far as to say I enjoyed watching my team get beaten 6-0, but it was a privilege to watch the great Glenn Hoddle strut his stuff at Plainmoor. What a player he was.

Just a couple of grand for a full back like Phil King and then selling on and tacking Mark Gardiner and Alan Mcloughlin as well as Charlie Henry ! Now why cant we do business like that these days...jeeeeez. It was even better business than that. The article mentions we sold him after 24 league games. That was because the bargain price fixed by a transfer tribunal also included a further payment after 25 league games. We had to sell him because we had no money to make that payment. We then negotiated a sell-on clause so got a third of the £375k profit that Swindon made when they sold him to Wednesday! Exeter, who had developed him all through his school years ,got nothing beyond the pitifully low initial fee! When I was between jobs earlier this year, I had the pleasure of attending a Senior Grecians zoom meeting where Phil was the guest. A very engaging, entertaining and honest character - now a pub landlord in Bristol.
