A comprehensive win tonight against what I thought was a poor Aldershot side who offered very little threat to the Torquay goal with McDonald just having to make a couple of sharp but comfortable saves. Little put in a good shift to earn man of the match award but for me and I suspect many others it was Duke McKenna who was head and shoulders above every other player on the pitch and literally ran rings around most of the Aldershot players.
We started by trying to pass the ball but almost immediately gave it away forcing Wynter on his 150th game to make a last-ditch tackle outside of the penalty area to concede a free kick and earn a yellow card for his troubles. After McDonald got down low to save and more importantly retain the ball, we slowly put pressure on the opposition soon earning a couple of corners and a freekick on the right after Duke McKenna was taken out very late after having left his marker dead in the water. It was from the second of these corners that Moxey was able to get clear near the edge of the area to head home decisively into the right hand corner of the net to open the scoring. We only had to wait a few minutes for the next goal, the ball came to CLE on the edge of the area and he was able to slip Duke McKenna clear, again leaving his marker dead in the water with his trickery and his cross across the 6 yard line was firmly guided home by Wearne to double the lead.
Aldershot heads were starting to drop and within 10 minutes we killed them off with a third. CLE made a twisting run on the left and as he tried to cut the ball back past the keeper it bounced and span past him at the near post and the defender could only shin the ball into his own net. Could have been four up before the break with DM hitting a good shot that was saved well by the keeper with Little then shooting over.
Aldershot then brought on 2 substitutions to try to change things up at the start of the second half but it made absolutely no difference with probably our best goal of the game scored a few minutes in. A good interception from Wearne in the centre of midfield enabled him to take the ball towards the area and pass out wide to Wright which saw him cross the ball to the far post, just evading DM but CLE was there to knock it in at the far post. It looks like it might turn into a rout but as it happens the side ended up in third gear and were unable to capitalise.
This was partly because we lost Lapslie midway through the second half, taking a knock which did not appear to be serious and of course Wright went off at the same time after about 66 minutes. DM continued to impress and CLE could have raced clear if a through ball had been hit with a little less power enabling their keeper to get there first. Again DM was able to do some good work in their area to create space for a shot that was just wide which Little was able to get on the end of and narrowly steer home although unfortunately not without beating the offside trap.
50 points on the board, traditionally the safety mark from relegation but hopefully should be able to make it mathematically so on Saturday…….
