Two nil up, won’t be long before the playoffs are mentioned again…TUFC, they do like to tease. 👙 Well, for the pessimists amongst you, today was the day where we have mathematically made it certain of avoiding relegation so season over. For the optimists, six points off the playoffs – you didn’t think it would be a relaxing end of the season languishing in mid-table did you? Will try to do a match report after walking the dogs before going out tonight…

A good comfortable win today in the Plainmoor sunshine. Living where we do on a beautiful warm sunny day it is tempting to choose a beach over football on a day like today, but I chose a raucous afternoon at Plainmoor. Torquay were a class above Weymouth and we have progressed into a decent team this season. Today I thought we looked a similar standard to what I witnessed last season. It was a real team effort today with plenty of commitment, spirit, fight and team work. Wright and Little really looked on their game today and it was reassuring they both looked fit. Little is normally rated on his passing but his pace and work rate is very good as well. Wright today looked like the Wright of last season again and capped his fine performance with Torquay's third goal today. Wearne was the pick of the players today and was deservedly voted sponsors MOTM.
The Plainmoor ptich looked lush and green and just before kick-off the referee did some impressive sprinting routines. I wish our strike force had that sort of pace I jokily said! Weymouth started brightly enough but Torquay gradually took control. Wearne made the vital breakthrough. He was put through on the left wing just inside the opposition half and took the ball into the penalty box and slotted the ball neatly low into the far corner of the net. A lovely move in the penalty box involving Wright, Lemonheigh-Evens and Little resulted in Little getting tripped. Up stepped Little himself and rather unconvincingly scored from the spot. Torquay were playing some great team football but it should also be noted that MacDonald had to make 4 decent saves in the first half, mainly from long range efforts and yet again MacDonald's handling all game was very assured.
Torquay effectively sealed the match shortly after the break with a beautiful team goal. Lemonheigh-Evans flicked on a Lapsie cross with a header and Wright ghosted in at the far post to head in. Game over realistically. There were chances at both ends for the rest of the half. Torquay got into some glorious positions but did not make the best of them choosing the wrong option or erratic shooting and Torquay stood firm at the back. 3-0 was probably a fair score line.
The only disappointment today was Opi Edwards getting substituted at half-time. Opi was playing at right wing back but his passing was often pretty woeful and did not offer much. Wearne switched wings to right wing back in the second half and Martin came on and went to his usual left wing back position. O'Connell and Holman later came on but both I thought looked average and did not really lift the team that I would like to see from substitutes. However, the rest of the team all played their part today and there looks to be a good balance in our starting 11. Hopefully Opi Edwaeds will improve in the coming weeks.
So it was good entertainment today and another pleasing win against struggling opposition. Weymouth brought 100 or so fans and in fairness that gave good vocal support. The Pop side responded by singing "3 nil on your big day out"!

Another clean sheet and comprehensive victory today to make it 7-0 at Plainmoor this week in the sunshine in front of a good crowd of 2538 with about 2400 in the home end. The pattern of scoring was almost replicated from that against Aldershot apart from the own goal but certainly on the day Weymouth were the better opposition and caused us a few problems to solve.
The first goal came when I think Little beat the offside trap with a good pass to Wearne and he was able to take the ball into the area and pick his spot at the far post to open the scoring. It was apparent that he was free on the far left at times and if some of our players could have found him more often then he might well have added to his tally..
The second goal came from some good harassment in midfield to steal possession and Little was able to break clear with the ball and as he cut back inside the area a clumsy challenge from the defender caught him for a clear penalty. The keeper got a hand to the subsequent shot and I was quite relieved to see it end up in the net but a close call. We continued to pressurise the Weymouth goal and Duke McKenna was unlucky not to score from the well worked freekick and Ihad another good chance on the edge of the area, lovely dink to create the space for a shot that went over.
However Weymouth were able to threaten at times, the first corner was short and the next one was long but the ball was worked back towards goal for a good chance. McDonald made a number of saves, pushing one just around the post and tipping a couple of good shots over the bar, nothing spectacular but good attempts nevertheless. Certainly deserved the halftime lead and as on Tuesday had a very early goal that put things to bed as the second half commenced. Some good play on the right continued even after Little went down with a knock to his midriff, with a cross headed backwards by CLE, Wright was at the far post to head emphatically home. Like on Tuesday, our drive and focus tailed off allowing Weymouth chances with McDonald called upon for a close range saves and also another at the death was hit wide when maybe they should’ve scored.
We were again wasteful in our attacks, either not getting crosses in or hitting well over when we could’ve had quite a few more to add to our tally but cannot be too critical when it is job done.

Routine win and 7;goals for and zero against in a matter of days.
Very few defeats in the last few months and no doubt the blabbermouths yelling for Gary Johnson’s head have crawled back under their bitter little shells.
I’m not optimistic for a play-off place but suddenly they look more in reach than a week ago. I think we’ll end up a little short ultimately but I hope things are going on behind the scenes to try and secure players for next season. CLE is far too good for us but I would hope to see him stay.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jamie Reid back next season - it hasn’t worked out for him in League 2 and I can’t see him lasting under Steve Evans; he’d be better off enjoying his football with us again in my view because he can’t be having much fun at Stevenage.

Agree that the playoffs are not out of reach as there's still 27 points to play for, although Bromley and Boreham Wood are above us with games in hand but on a downward spiral. We would need to 7 or 8 wins out of the last 9 and hope Bromley, Boreham Wood, Grimsby etc lose more than they win.

If still in contention come May, having Stockport as the penultimate match would be good as they will probably be champions by then, preferably with them still in the FA Trophy final the following week.
